but they have taken eyes out, broken skin and cause cyclists to fall off bikes putting them in danger .
Wouldnt mind so much as they are only protecting their nests, but their nests are high up in a fucking tree, ive no wish to climb trees anymore, therefore i am no danger to these bastards..

This brings up the philosophical debate as to whether animals are people. I spent a year on it. Run to the hills.

What does intelligence even mean? It's just a term coined by humans.

Just what is the definition of an intelligent animal act.

More likely the cat doesn't get the chance, the bird nicks its off him so quickly. Obviously doesn't like cats.  :)

Of possible interest to the denizens of this thread, a documentary film Project Nim is on BBC4 tonight at 9pm.

...a research project that was mounted to determine whether a primate raised in close contact with humans could develop a limited "language" based on American Sign Language. The project was centered on a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky.

More on the real Project Nim here (it was a follow up to Project Washoe that some might recall)

It's made by James Marsh, the guy who directed Man On Wire so will likely be very good.

intelligent, my arse..

I was in Australia 7 years ago and my friend and I stopped under a tree to put our backpacks down for a bit (we had no idea about the birds at the time) and this magpie just sat on the ground watching us. We thought it wanted food at first. When we started walking again I heard my friend who was walking behind me shout something and the next second it felt like something hard hit the left side of my head. I got an actual cut from the beak. It didn't just bump into me. Had to go for a tetanus shot.

Isn't that just so cute. I love Praying Mantis. A Praying Mantis is able to turn it's head around just like us, which is very unusual for insects and most interestingly they are able to 'hear', ultrasonically, as unlike all other insects, they actually have one ear in the centre of their abdomen. This is to warn them of preying bats.

Loved them, I used to have one living in my room way back. Used to eat all the bugs that came in during the summer. I would leave the lamp on to attract the bugs and he would have a right go at them!

Not a particularly nice article, but in a decade's time we will no longer read about these animals because they'll be extinct in the wild. What a shame, white rhinos are such unique animals.

I remember that thing about crows using bread as bait to catch fish as well.

If anyone ever says a bad word about crows I shall not stand for it.

They can snowboard, fish, and to be honest if they had their own fantasy football table I wouldn't be too surprised.
