Another election night tonight in Canada. Most polls are pointing to a Liberals win - probably a minority/coalition government, but polls have been wrong before. Lots to learn for UK politics from this, I think. Incumbent Conservative government being beaten (maybe) by a centrist party that has taken a bit more of a leftist agenda into this election. They have a young charasmatic leader (Justin Trudeau) who the opposition famously said "wasn't ready" at the start of the campaign, but who has come on massively and has taken some courageous policy positions. The big winning message has been about a willingness to run deficits to invest in infrastructure - a traditionally more socialist position, but one that is presented as a cohesive economic vision towards prosperity. Very little in the Liberal platform about addressing wealth inequality (except a commitment to tax the top 1% more, and the rest less) - more about collective prosperity through improved infrastructure. Will be interesting to see what happens today.
