Used to love how he would straight at defenders and then drag the ball with his left, then his right, to run around them before they even moved. He used to hang in the air like a cross between a triple jumper and a slalom skier when doing this.

I think the QPR goal on that vid is his best example, the one where he beats four of them and rolls it in. I swear for a second at 3:01 he is floating.

definitely deserved a few more honours during his time here. can anyone confirm how his achilles injury came about? a few comments about brightwell from city but i could have sworn he got injured on england duty, possibly in finland. can anyone confirm?

Yes it was for England. Around 91. I can't remember the game though.

In this day an age what with an advance in medical procedures he may well have recovered enough so that he could have still performed like he did previously (same with Lawrenson whose achilles went when he was 28).

Souness was offered 4 million for Barnes from Marseille after the injury and refused.
He would have accepted if it was 6 million, I remember.

Although still a quality player he was never the same after that injury.
And in our last league winning season he was great.

Good video, exactly the type of winger we need today for both sides, shame he hasn't suceeded at management.

Him and Kenny will always be my favourite players. Was superb, I mean, really superb. And this day and age of mental Sky hype where a good cross is the greatest cross football has ever seen, Barnes would have been worth fucking £100m +. Brilliant player.

That Villa goal in the last minute is my all time favourite goal of his. With his weaker foot too.

Can you not change the thread title?
I don't know if it's going to be an anti him, about his bankruptcy, about him being a legend, about a possible return to management, or about a possible nasty illness he may have contracted.
Or maybe it's about all of it, and it's a bland long-standing thread title.

Far and away the best player I have ever seen in the flesh. He had absolutely everything, he could things with a football that you'd think were Hollywood bollocks if anyone ever dared to put them in a film.

To get Evertonian for a moment - ifithadn'tofbeenferhysel he would be remembered as one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

Best moment for me was Barnsey scoring a header versus Villa at Villa park in the FA Cup circa 88 when we played in that white top must of been about 7-8,000 reds there ...did it the hard way that year then f**ked it up in the final

Always rem the kop chant of 'johnny Barnes'.  Brilliant.  Rem one goal in particular against Villa.  They were holding out gamefully for a 0-0.  Last min Barnesy picks it up, seemingly no danger, and then rifles a curler into the top corner at the kop end.  Most tehnically gifted player I've had pleasure to watch for the reds, closely followed by Beardsley,  and both played in the same team.  Feel privilaged to have witnessed them during late 80's.

Barnsey was a great footballer. Totally dissed, when he played for England - but he was great when he played for us.

Has to be said though, he was utterly shite at presenting football on TV.

He was good but am I the only one who thought Mark Walters was better? I remember being in primary school at the time (till the rozzers rumbled me) and debating whether Walters was better than Maradonna. With his unreadable step-over and marvellous middle name, Mark Walters was always the thinking man's choice.
