Anybody seen John Woo's Hard Boiled? Meant to be a classic of Hong Kong Cinema.I fixed that for you. ;D
[/quote]A great film.Woo choreograph's hs film's brilliantly. This like most of Woo's hong Kong film's is uber violent,Chow Yun Fat is the epitome of cool.

You watch Woo's film's and you can see how influential his work is,the last 30 minute's in the hospital are brilliant.

Cool, I might watch Hard Boiled tonight. Don't think I could stomach some of Takashi Miike films from what I've read about them. Though The Happiness of the Katakuris looks quite interesting.

13 Assasins by Miike belongs to 10 best samurai movies list. IMHO.

Got Hard Bolied on DVD - high octance action is an understatement.  Saw Hansel & Gretel not long back on Film 4 - weird and enjoyable.  i have mentioned this before i think but Versus is a good action movie.

I fixed that for you. ;D

Watched it last night and really enjoyed it. It kind of builds slowly - relatively anyway, there's still quite a bit of intensity - for the first hour which I liked, but the last hour is non-stop. It's really funny as well. And yeah, the hospital bit is awesome.

I saw the devil and chaser are a couple of my favourite films. Both brilliantly entertaining Korean films. I watched Sin nombre on Netflix which was class.

If you have love film instant there is a film on there called Macabre which is like an Indonesian Texas chainsaw massacre which if daft but I really enjoyed, very gory and quite atmospheric.

Sin Nombre is a great film.

A good look at the chase for the American dream seen from the other side of the border.

Try and see Miss Bala, that's another good film this time  from Mexico.

The Experiment- A brilliant german film... I reckon it's totally underrated. Think it's been remade too... bet it's not as good though.

Run Lola Run - Thought it was fantastic.

Livide - French horror film. One of the creepiest I've ever watched and its not too gory.

Tomie - The entire series of films are great, but the last one is surreally nuts. Loved it.

Audition - Made me cringe it was that horrible!!!

The orphanage - a really creepy film.

Phobia - A collection of short films, I thought it was brilliant.

Pan's Labyrinth is a lovely film and to go into more of the fantasy horror stuff Re-Cycle is one of the best looking films I've ever watched.

Two that haven't been mentioned (I don't think):

The Wave, which is really, really good

and

TimeCrimes, which is very interesting indeed, and wonderfully put together (and obviously influenced by Pan's Labyrinth at one particular point)

Rust and Bone is out next week too. It won the highest award at the London Film Festival and is from the director whose previous films include The Beat My Heart Skipped and A Prophet.

They're quite similar in that they both concentrate on the human aspect of the relevant investigations, both films are character studies rather than thrillers.

Personally, I think 'Zodiac' is Fincher's best film, and by some distance.

Very difficult to watch, despite not being overly graphic, I think it's rated 15 in the UK, I'm quite liberal when it comes to film certifications (My ten year old loves Beetlejuice which is a 15) but even I think 15 may be a touch too young.  Matthias Schoenaerts is fantastic and went on to star in the even better 'Rust And Bone'.

I have been watching mostly Non- English movies for the past year and I was surprised at how brilliant some of these were. Some of the best I have watched recently are My Neighbour Totoro and the The Apu Trilogy. My Neighbour Totoro is just a great children's film but even watching it as an adult can be quite rewarding. The Apu trilogy on the other hand is all Neo-Realism. It has very little plot but just the way it is shot makes it a great experience. Although the film is set in colonial India its appeal is universal.

Usually foreign ( i.e non English language) films on DVD deliver a consistent high quality...unlike Hollywood who put and promote any shit... companies who promote foreign films cut the wheat from the chaff.... recently I watched the excellent Argentinian cirme thriller "The Secret in their eyes"

It's on tonight on BBC4 for those haven't seen it, like me.

My favourite non-English films:

In Heaven Below
Against the Wall
To the Limit
Downfall
The White Ribbon
Amélie
The Children of Bullerbu
The Crimson Rivers
La Haine
The Chorus
Soul Kitchen
The Lives of Others

Probably forgot a couple but these are the ones that I can think of at the top of my head.

I remember how both the actor Bruno Ganz (who is one of the best German actors ever) and the director were ridiculed and put down for doing such a haunting portrayal of Hitler  ::)

I watched Kieślowski's  'A Short Film About Killing' last night, an extended chapter of his 'Dekalog' series.  It really is an outstanding film on it's own merits.  Kieślowski is probably one of the most underrated directors of all time, I haven't seen a film from him that I haven't admired in some way, 'The Double Life Of Veronique' is brilliant, let alone his 'Three Colors' trilogy.
