Tiago Ilori has joined Bordeaux on loan for the season

http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/169152-reds-confirm-ilori-loan-deal

Hope he gets to play a lot. Would have liked him to be our 4th pick for CB this season. I reckon he's loaned out because one, or both of Coates and Agger will remain at the club.

The French league might not be the strongest, but playing time at this stage of his career is vital. Hopefully  he'll be a mainstay in their starting 11 and acquire good experience.

The new Dani Pacheco

In what way?

Ilori is in a much more difficult position to get playing time, it takes a shit ton of balls to give a 21 year old CB a debut in the premiership especially when he's never played in English football before, and unlike strikers or wide players, you don't really want to start rotating your defence mid game, you want it to stay as steady as possible.

I'd love to know the average starting age of CBs in the premiership, i'd imagine it's ~29

Pacheco would have loved to be regarded highly enough to get a year long loan at a club like Bordeaux. Figuring out a way to develop these young defenders, without throwing them into the fire that is playing for us, is obviously difficult. No club has really found a consistent way of doing it at the highest level but hopefully this works for him and Wisdom.

Well, the writing's on the wall that Toure will leave as his contract runs out, and Ilori comes in. It would be a shock if that didn't happen next season.

I suspect so. Hope he plays a lot would have liked him to pick up FA cup and league cup ties but if Agger and/or Coates stick around Ilori wont get any games. Loan makes sense.

I like to think that the club is savvy enough now with its loans that it would insist minimum games clause in its contract for its loanees.

Should be a good loan, although.. wasn't Ilori playing regularly for SP before we got him? Given the chance to do things over, should we have just loaned him back to SP after we signed him, a la Origi?

Young, full of promise. Loan after loan.

Obviously their situations are different. But still, Ilori played quite a few games for Sporting before he came here, and the league in Portugal isn't exactly shit. He spent half season out on loan and played regularly only to come back and be shipped out again. Obviously Rodgers has seen that he's yet to make the grade and has sent him out on loan again hoping for improvement, and this from a manager who's not afraid to give youth a chance and who just played a young and promising 20 year old right back who made fewer La Liga appearances than Ilori last season. You'd imagine that if Ilori came back from Bordeaux and Rodgers still isn't pleased, then he won't have much of a future at the club.

He'll come back and take over Toure's role in the squad next season as one of four centrebacks. The lad has a future here for sure, but why waste the present by sitting on the bench? He'll come back next season with another season of football under his belt and be ready to go.

Didn't some Bordeaux fan on here say when he was first linked that they had nothing in defense?  I'm sure he will play quite a bit, otherwise we probably wouldn't have sent him out at all.

You'd imagine that if Ilori came back from Bordeaux and Rodgers still isn't pleased, then he won't have much of a future at the club.

I just don't think they're remotely similar. Ilori's loans have come at a time when he needs to be playing competitive football to continue his progression, whereas Pacheco's were well after that horse had bolted. I also think there's a huge difference when you're looking at a young centre back. Maybe we could have passed up the chance to sign Manquillo and found some way to shoehorn Ilori into the side, but I think that would be to the detriment of both the player and the club.

I don't see any problem at all with how Ilori has been managed. The one thing that stands out to me is that there is actually a plan. He spent 6 months at the club after his signing, went on loan to Spain and now has been sent on a season long loan to a decent team. Looking forward to his continued progress ;)

Believe he is still getting over his injury so will be ready soon.

I fancy the decision to send him to Bordeaux is to help his french communication in general, especially with the likes of Lovren and Sakho making the future of our defence.

They won't be speaking french in our defence. Will all be speaking English, Lovren has already said his French isn't great anyway.

Would be a strange decision if that was the basis for it given Lovren speaks perfect English and Sakho will of been over here for 2 years come next summer.

He played his first game for Bordeaux this past weekend against Guingamp. Started the match at RCB and played 90 minutes. Unfortunately they lost 2-1. One was a penalty conceded by midfielder Sertic and another one a header from a set piece where one of the other players lost their man.

Playing against St Etienne on bt sports 2, had a half decent start. You can understand why we've loaned him to French football to toughen him up, seems like every french team has 3 or 4 players built like a super middle weight boxer.
