King Kenny and Expectations.
« on: January 8, 2011, 01:48:33 pm »
First of all, let me first say how delighted I am at the return of the King. I remember the day he left like it was yesterday. Bawling my eyes out reading ceefax, with the headline that Kenny quit. Calling my dad at the office to tell him the news. I was 10 years old then and Kenny Dalgish was the only Liverpool manager I had ever known. Not only that, but he was also a father figure to me. I remember feeling safe every time I saw him on TV. I dont know why but I just did.

Today has been 20 years in the making. It could have happened 19 years and a half ago before we hired Souness. It could have happened 17 years ago when Evans took charge. It almost definately should have happened 6 months ago after Rafa's departure. Either way, it's happened. Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish. How good does that sound?

But now the hard work begins. And the hardest thing for me is going to be downplaying expectations.

We're not suddenly going to transform ourselves into the great 88 side, with Babel as Barnes, Kuyt as Beardsley and Skrtel as Hansen. We're not going to win the league and cup double. We're not suddenly going to be in the Champions League. There are severe limitations to our squad, some due to Rafa's mistakes, some due to Hodgson's, and some due to the off the field issues we've had. We're not suddenly going to find we have speedy wingers who can beat their man, or a good backup for Torres, or pace at the back.

The most we can hope for this season, on the pitch, is an improvement of the performances we've seen this season. We've got 2 trophies to win and, if we win tomorrow, we can go far in both of them. But the priority has to be improving the football on the park we've been watching all season. Redressing soome of the mistakes made by Hodgson and yes by Rafa in his last term as well. Improving the away record. Playing the Liverpool Way again. Any success we can get is a bonus.

The most important thing for me is that we have unity again. That we can go into games actually looking forward to them, not wondering what result will hasten Hodgson's exit or prolong his stay. Actually get pissed off at bad results andd annalyzing players performances rather than being semi happy, thinking that surely Roy is gone after that. Unity now until the end of the season, all behind one man and one set of owners, supporting the team the Liverpool Way.

Nor more excuses. We got rid of the Yanks and of Hodgson. Fresh start off the field for us. Let's enjoy the rest of the season, no matter where we end up and let's support the King. But please don't expect any miracles.

After months of misery, I say we at least wait until the transfer window closes before we start being pessimistic again.

All I expect is to feel proud of my club again. A man at the helm who loves us and who we love, who gets us and we get and someone the players have to respond to.

I expect nothing. If things go wrong the last person to blame is Kenny. I'm just glad that Hodgson hasn't had time to put his stamp on the squad.

All I want is for the players to give 100% in every match. If they don't do it for Kenny, then they won't do it for anyone.
I just hope that, come the end of the season, Kenny will remain a part of this club once the new manager comes in.

It can't do anything but good and improve team performances on the pitch. Kenny is a legend and a winner as a player and a manager. He has credibility with the players that Hodgson could never have.

If we play better the results will come. I don't think Kenny will have any sacred cows - the players will have to earn their place in the line up. I remember his time well though and I'm sure that under the closer scrutiny we now have that some of his decisions will be controversial. I'll never understand why he signed David Speedie.

Europe. And the quarter finals of the Europa League. That's what I'm asking for. Give that Arsenal arguably will win the Carling Cup, sixth ought to be enough, maybe even 7th. And the opposition in Europe is not monstrous, it's the sort of teams we should beat. Provided not getting City in the 1/4, I think the semis are realistic.

I also expect at least three away victories in the remaining matches, because we'll need it.

I expect a more positive approach to games, particularly away from home and I expect to see us playing a formation that gets the best out of the players rather than rigidly expecting them to adhere to a preferred setup that may not suit them as well.

Both of these changes should obviously lead to improvements, but I am not expecting more than that right now.

I expect nothing, but for the first time in a long time I have hope

excellent -

hope that any player that does not play for the shirt from now until the end of the season leaves, that we unite as a club - fans, players, manager and even owners, that we play decent football without fear

fsg have come a long way since not even speaking to the man to appointing him as manager - fair play I hope for great things from them incuding a decent left midfielder and another striker

COME ON YOU REDS!

Minimum requirement, play something that resembles football and finish 16th or higher.
Next requirement to see the players express themselves in the opponents 1/2 for more than 5 minutes a game.
Managers requirement respect LFC (fans, players, staff) fuck the rest.

The rest will have to wait until our long term manager is in place (whoever that may be).
