Match Report: Liverpool 3-0 Bolton - A view from the armchair.
« on: December 26, 2008, 08:35:44 pm »
After Manchester United and Chelsea both picked up maximum points today it was essential that we kept up the pace, with Mascherano missing at Arsenal with Flu last week the smart money was on him reclaiming his starting berth this afternoon, Bolton having won 3 of their last 5 matches since meeting us earlier in the season.

One change for the trotters from the one that won against Pompey was Fabrice Muamba replacing Kevin Davies. Rafael Benitez took his place alongside Parry in the stands, complete with headset, keeping him in touch with his number 2, Sammy Lee, in the dug out.

The game began a bit rocky after Kevin Nolan, finding space on the right put a dangerous cross into the box aiming for an unmarked Gardner only for Pepe to snatch the ball out of the sky. This was the most Bolton would see of the ball for the majority of the first 45 minutes, Liverpool were up the other end in seconds, a Riera shot deflected off Keane, as the Irishman was unable to get out of the way or convert the chance.

Riera was in the thick of it minutes later when receiving the ball at the byline he somehow managed to skip past two defenders and put in a cross, constant pressure on the opposition goal saw Riera pop up on the right side of the pitch, something which seemed to put him off as he seemed to think he was directly in front of goal resulting in him shooting yards wide of Jaskelainnen's left hand post.

The team and fans remained patient and relentlessly methodical in their pursuit of breaking the deadlock, we got our reward 25 minutes in as Gerrard placed the ball at the corner flag for Liverpool's 8th corner of the game so far, whilst in the box Riera was conducting a private tete a tete with Daniel Agger. The next minute Gerrard whips in a ball to the near post, Riera sticks out a foot and directs the ball over the line 1-0 to the current league leaders.

The rest of the half sees the same the same patient build up, keeping possession and clawing it back when it's conceded stubbornly searching for a second goal. After the re-start Steinsson gives away a free kick and receives the first booking from an allegedly trigger happy Alan Wiley. A few seconds later Steinsson's in trouble again as Riera clutches his face as if Tyson's had a go at him. This is one side of Riera's game I'd prefer to see less of, as Emirates saw, a sending off is not always a helpful turn of events, especially when it's perceived as unjust, so cut it out please Albert.

From the resultant freekick young Emiliano Insua receives the ball and dribbles it into no less than 5 Bolton players demonstrating how difficult the Trotters were making it for The Reds. A counter from Bolton sees the away side win a rare corner, only for the unflappable Reina to pluck it out the air, a further Bolton attack saw our number 25  anticipate and snuff out any potential danger. I love this man. Our young Argentine left back picked up possession and crossed from deep into Keane, who dummied it for Kuyt, who was on a completely different wavelength and the ball was intercepted putting an end to a promising move. Seconds later with Bolton in possession Alonso slide tackles the ball into the skippers path who slides a ball through to a confident Robbie Keane and finishes the move with aplomb.

Just over half an hour remaining Bolton in possession from the kick off only for Agger to lunge in two footed on Elmander, getting the ball but earning a yellow for his trouble. This was indicative of Liverpool's sheer reluctance to allow the trotters to retain possession. Bolton floated the freekick into the area, and was met by a Bolton head but all that did was help it onto to a grateful Pepe Reina who leapt on the opportunity to find Alonso, who passed it to Benayoun who then set up Keane for his second and Liverpool's third.

Bolton decided to throw a few men forward and this point, for an alert Insua to concede a corner, to which the young Argentine was the first to and put it out for another which O'Brien puts wide. In an effort to change the balance Megson makes a double substitution with Riga on for Taylor and Smolarek replacing Elmander. It makes little difference as Liverpool keep to their gameplan and have little urgency.

22 minutes to go sees the introduction of El Zhar for Riera and, shortly after, Lucas for Gerrard who gets a deserved standing ovation. Liverpool on the attack and the irrepressible Kuyt forces Bolton to concede yet another corner, with the skipper off Alonso takes up the set piece duties and puts the ball right on Daniel Agger's head only for him to put his effort wide.

It's almost turned into a training ground match as time after time El Zhar finds himself in acres of space, the odd counter from Bolton fritters out and another Liverpool attack is put together, the introduction of Ngog for surprise sub Kuyt does nothing to stop Liverpool's dominance with Andrew O'Brien, Steinsson and McCann making sure the score stayed respectable.

Muamba puts the ball into Smolarek on 83 minutes only for the Bolton man to shoot narrowly wide, easily Bolton's best chance and for the first time making Reina work. Five minutes later Jamie Carragher finds himself in the final 3rd for a second time, previously shooting just over the bar. He threads a Xabi-esque ball to Keane, only for Steinsson to get to the ball first. Just before the final whistle and Keane receives the ball on the edge of the box, he unselfishly puts Ngog in only for O'Brien to be there yet again.

The fans will be happy with this one.

MoM - Andy O'Brien

Nice job. :)

Bit harsh on Riera, he was clotheslined by Steinsson only 2 minutes after Steinsson's yellow for a bad challenge on Xabi. An elbow in the throat is a yellow card offence and it must have been Alan Wiley's Christmas spirit that prevented him being sent off, calling over skipper Nolan as well as Steinsson to let them know that.

Best performance I've seen for a while, and probably the least competitive Bolton I've seen in ages. Even snidey Davies, who I was very surprised not to see starting the game, offered nothing. The best he could muster was a feeble push in the back on Insua, for a free kick on our goal line, otherwise he was totally anonymous.

Great to see Insua and Riera working so well together down the left, and Keane's brace will do him the world of good.

Unbeaten at home in 2008 and top of the league, long may it continue.

MoM - Mister Xabworth Alonso. Absolutely fantastic performance, the fulcrum of all our play.

(Ironically enough, considering the thread title, this was my first game in about five years, so my view was actually from block 204 8) Cheers Kev ;))

I just love the way Gerrard and Alonso controlled the game, especially Alonso. A lot of us think that he can't control a fast game but he did it superbly last night. MoTM, closely followed by Insua for me

These new post match reports dont seem to draw many comments but hopefully the number of views they are getting will mean they continue. They have both been good and a balanced well written report on the game is a welcome addition to these boards. Thanks to those involved so far and those who will be involved in the future.

we steamrollered this lot for 40 minutes at their place.
they changed it tactically and managed to stem the flow a bit that day.

imo this was a side who always were gonna struggle against us.

i wouldnt read too much into our good performance unless we string a few games together like this and against oppostion who are set up to either cause us problems or to park the bus.

I have been really ill since getting back from PSV. I hope Mascher hasn't got this flu. The fucking thing will not go away. Anyway, I've been getting on with what I have needed to be doing - working, getting a few bob and that. But the simplest of things, leaves me fucking knackered and gasping for breath. And I haven't had a bevvie or a ciggie since I went down. It's also to blame for me spending far too much time in here lately.
But yesterday, I thought fuck this, found the match stream nice and early, and got meself settled in.... half bottle of Vodka and 8 cans of lager. After weeks of shite, it was heaven and I made more noise from me own couch than the Kop did.  Drunk or not, I seen some great things in that performance yesterday (3rd goal reminded me of the great days), and it's about time we started to let the lads know we have some faith in them.

I was only thinking the other day how I've managed to catch full games on the tv a lot this season, when up pops this fixture with nobody covering it.

Anyway, a mate gave me his eseason ticket code and I listened to the live commentary on .tv, while assembling a basketball net and stand. Funny it was, too, both commentators shouting "yeeessssss" when we scored.

It's easy to say they were not their usual self but we tend to do that when we detroy teams so easily.
Alonso was at his very best against Bolton and his role in the 3rd goal was Souness at his best. He even looked like him when he was galloping forward with his chest out, head scanning for the best pass to play, then delivering.
Fantastic goal.............5 seconds from one end to the other.Superb movement off the ball especially from Keane and a cutting edge.

Keane still going in January is he lads?

For Bolton's future Reference:

You might also show Bolton the dictionary definition of ambition, as they lacked it. Seems as though they thought that putting men behind the ball at Anfield was all they had to do to get a point. When we play well other teams play badly, but the manner in which we brushed aside a team that was geared to hang on for a point will hopefully see a turning point in the season.

Thanks for the match report.

it is amazing to hear the Liverpool supporters can not watch the game on TV in England and especially in City of Liverpool itself. while here in Toronto Canada i have not missed a single game from beloved Liverpool live in 4 years.

Thanks. It was a toughy Keane scoring two was an obvious contender, Benayoun seemed to be in the thick of everything good we did, Insua continued his encouraging form, Gerrard was great, Xabi was outstanding, Sami was staking a claim for the right wing spot, Riera played well.

I just thought without O'Brien yesterday we could have seen a cricket score.

it was a funny game, as far as my emotions are concerned.

i was all laid back on my bed, the telly right in front. Fairly calm, not sure if it was one of confidence or resignation that bolton would park the bus and we would draw the game.

the emotions heightened once we scored. When the corner was being taken, Agger and Riera was "biting each other's ears", and i went "c'mon albert !"   He scored !

I got more panicky after the goal, because we needed to win. And what a performance.
Everyone seemed to click. Really do not want to pick on Kuyt though i rather him upfront than outwide (if its only these 2 choices).

Stevie could've move forward abit more.
Insua should seal the left back spot for years to come.
Yossi had his best game of the season.
Carra looked a decent right back.
Xabi was well...Xabi. Absolutely fantastic.
Keane would nick MOM for his goals though.

You think Anfield's quiet now. What do you think it would be like if the game could be watched (legitimately) live in the house or alehouse?
