Nothing there rings any bells for me. I'd like to know what this building in the right is with all the adverts on.

Golddust.

You've got to see this....http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=79437 ....Film of it!

The Liverpool bit starts at about 1.06 and shows the mounted police starting off from Hatton Garden and then further clips in assorted places. Brilliant.

That must be it, pictured from the rear. It's a mirror of the front of the building with 7 windows across on each floor and those two arched doorways for the wagons to be shunted inside.
Looking closely I think I can just make out the LOHR, arrowed, as well.

And I've just found this now here

which confirms what I suspected. Carbonari must have stood on the platform just behind where the carriages are and taken the picture looking down.. You can see the top floor of the building in question. 7 Windows with an identical style.

Looks like it's a tea or coffee shop, lots of plaques on the wall.
That sign below on the right must be for 'Royal' something (unless they knew back then that Roy was coming ;))

Royal Lancashire - whatever that is. The brickwork of that building is what is puzzling me, looks very 'common'.

It's an ad for the 'Royal Lancashire Show Bury' which is where it was held that year, 1911.

I was wondering if that building had something to do with travel. My first thought - because of the area - was Exchange Station.

Tsar. Them two, are one and the same photo.

Ones B/W, and ones tinted.

I see what you are saying regarding dating, but they are exactly the same photo, even down to the people on the street and the time on the clock.

I can't beleive that more or us have not got onto this site.

I've just had a quick skim through the previous ten pages of this thread, and the only passing mention of this site that I can find,  is one photo from Tsar, on page six.

It's a commercial site though, so you may not be able to lift the images.

Mostly post WW2, but there's the odd earlier one.

You could spend hours in this place...

You're right Richie it's a cracking site, with loads of pages - as for lifting the images ! heaven forbid.
The Church St. photies I did know about mate, the 'before and after' was referring to the difference between the b&w and the tinted result.

Last post on this one....

From studying the railway map....

here's a pretty precise location for that photo...

In the pic below, the camper van and breakdown truck(left arrow) are parked in the position of the gates to the right(as your facing it) of the original building in the old photo.
I reckon those cobble stones they are parked on are probably the original ones.
That wall at the front is much more recent.

And that bit of track (middle arrow) set in the road might just be the last remnant of the docks railway system. It curved out and joined the tracks that ran underneath the LOHR. There was another track to it's right (top arrow) curving towards town but all that's left of that is a bit of granite peeking out of the tarmac in the road tracing where it had been.

(I'm coming up to Liverpool tomorrow and might just have a quick detour to see if it's still there.)

If you wander up Bankfield Street on streetview, to your right is possible the remains of the side wall of that building.

Top positioning on the Strand by the way.

Tsar, I found this little gem about Jones&co in google cache here...

Knotty Ash Ale – a £2500 tipple
Auction Reports - 05 December 2003
RARE pub jugs have a habit of turing up in unusual places. The previously unrecorded Knotty Ash Ales jug, right, made in the latter years of the 19th century for Joseph Jones & Co., had been spotted in a thrift shop in British Columbia earlier this year.

Sounds like it went for £2500 at auction. Interesting that it ended up in British Columbia of all places.

You need to pay a subscription to the site to get any more info.

Tell me something Gulley, are those the lines that are on the floor part of the line that would have linked to the old Riverside station? I know they looked a bit like that and went along underneath the LOR for most of the length of the docks but I've never seen a proper map of the line

Ha ! love that Gulley, cheers.

Think I'm going to throw me hand in with that pic though - looking like a waste of time - even though it can't be too many streets, what with it having tram tracks.

.... are those the lines that are on the floor part of the line that would have linked to the old Riverside station?

No, Riverside station was just by the Pier Head.

See here, here and here

The tracks that ran into Riverside are here

You can see the remains still in the setts. If you go into streetview you can see them from the side.

The route to Riverside was not from the dock system, ie the tracks shown underneath the LOHR, but from Edge Hill via Waterloo Tunnel.

This ran deep below the original entrance viaduct to Exchange, long gone, you used to be able to glimpse it on the trains into Exchange, and then ran almost under Great Howard street goods and emerged at Waterloo goods station where a spur then ran on to Riverside. You can just about still make out its route from Google satellite.

The section that was visible from the Exchange approach lines seems to have been submerged somewhere but you can still see part of the tunnel where it emerges briefly as a cutting here

Cheers for that, good stuff. I vaguely remember seeing riverside station, (or more accurately its remains) in the early 90s when out walking with my dad but I was too young to really think much about what it was. I do remember driving past this a fair bit tho, so I don't know what I never connected the dots there! There used to be quite a lot of those old tram-type lines on the streets around the docks but each time I go back to Liverpool there are less.

There are some brill photos of inside the Waterloo tunnel on that subterrania britannica site, mad that we have that and the wapping tunnel under the city but can't come up with any use for them!

...... but I've never seen a proper map of the line

I've got a couple of old maps of Liverpool that I use to get my bearings, one a Premier A-Z from the early 70's (8/6d!) which seems to be actually the early 60's in its content, and one from the late 40's, and between them they cover almost all the old streets as well as showing the railway layouts on the docks etc.
I'm going to be a bit busy for the next couple of months with work swatting up on stuff and travelling but when I get a chance I'll scan them in and stick them on a server somewhere with a link on here for you and anyone else to download them.

I'm not sure, but maybe the tank was filled up locally. There's a hose running along the floor - a full tank would be a bit more dynamic than a hose. Hope that's what happened anyway.

Has anyone got those pictures of around Liverpool that were put up from a site a woman had put together after visiting the city years ago? There was one of outside The Kop that kavah now has in his avatar?
