Benteke seemed to be pulling out wide a lot similar to how Suarez was for us.  Obviously he's no Suarez but I could see Sturridge and him working on a similar level either in a 433 or diamond.

There could be issues there. That will require Sturridge playing as a wide forward.

It will just be limiting his impact. It was fine when Chelsea experimented with him when he was younger, but it's not a role he should be going back to now.

So how did Sturridge do it when he played with Suarez? The diamond only kicked in much later in 13-14.

I think if we're getting Benteke and Sturridge in the same side it has to be some variation of 442 or 352. Which wouldn't be a bad thing as we don't really score enough with 4231/433 under Brendan.

I'm surprised we didn't work on 2 forwards more during preseason given we have a good group of 4 strikers and our only wide forward who has any hope of hitting double figures in Firmino.

The only incarnation of a genuine 433 we've seen has been Sterling, Suarez, & Sturridge in 2013-14, and that was devastating. The '433' we played last season was basically a 4141.

If we play 433 with Firmino, Benteke, & Sturridge, we'll score lots of goals.

This is right.

When we play "433" but with players like Lallana or Ibe as the wide attackers its not really more than a 4141 since neither of them score enough yet.

With 3 genuine striker types capable of getting 10+ goals each across the front you're in business though, presuming the two wider attackers can do their share of defensive work.

Firmino-Benteke-Sturridge could be ridiculously devastating as all three are capable of creating goals for themselves. The only question I'd have is whether Sturridge would be committed to playing on the wing and tracking back enough, but with a boss midfield and Clyne behind him I'm sure his goals would more than offset any defensive downsides.

I don't think we played 433 with Sturridge and Sterling wide enough games to suggest is was devastating. As far as i remember Sturridge wasn't great wide(especially in his defensive duty) and that's because he simply doesn't like playing there not that he can't. 442D with Sterling as the 10 was devastating. But not with Sturridge wide. Sturridge isn't going to be happy to be moved wide. He didn't look happy moving out there for Luis Suarez. He certainly ain't going to be happy moving for a lesser player in Benteke. Sturridge think's he's a striker and thinks he's the main man, which he should do given his scoring record(not his injury record).

442D with Firmino behind Sturridge and Benteke might work. But again we really don't work on this shape during preseason so it's clearly not something that's Brendan thinking about.

Well Sturridge will have been out for a hell of a long time when he's match fit next.

If Benteke's averaging one in two, its upto Sturridge to do better than that and his general play to take his spot if the manger is going with one up top.

I think once Sturridge is fit, we may see more of the diamond. If not, I don't see Sturridge as the type to complain about being a wide forward, especially if it means him getting regular football once again and being part of a side that can be in contention for the top 4 and perhaps a cup or two.

Benteke, Sturridge and Firmino could be a hell of a front 3. With Coutinho pulling the strings, that attack can match any in the league, but lots of ifs there. Lets see how it goes.

Devastating weapon to unleash in the second half of the season. We absolutely shouldn't rush him back as there is no need.

That's true.

Watching this preseason with us using 433/4231 i'd still change it and play two up front to start the season. I'd much prefer getting Ings in the team at the expense of Lallana or Ibe just to get another goal threat in the box when we're attacking. Of course those wide forwards are capable of cutting in and scoring a wonder strike(and they have done in preseason) but you can't rely on that week in and week out.

Fair point on playing two up top, but Lallana & Ibe aren't genuine forwards. I'd also prefer us to play two up top if we're just going to play Lallana/Coutinho or Ibe wide.

So, as Arsenal just showed, pre-season really is pretty meaningless as an indicator for how the team will perform in the first game.

They had one of their most successful against pretty strong opposition, and, well, there you go...  :fishslap

They do seem to be locking into a regular pattern now. It's all commercial, we have more fans in those regions. South American tour would be great, though.

The Reds will be one of 10 clubs competing in the tournament, joining the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Also confirmed as taking part are AC Milan, Inter Milan and Celtic, as well as fellow English clubs Chelsea and Leicester City.

Liverpool’s ICC fixtures are as follows:
•July 27: Liverpool v Chelsea – Rose Bowl; Pasadena, California. 8:30pm Pacific time (4.30am BST, July 28).
•July 30: Liverpool v AC Milan – Levi’s Stadium; Santa Clara, California. 7pm Pacific time (3am BST, July 31).
