0-0 written all over this match.
Seriously. In jest or otherwise let's cut the pessimistic shit.

You want the team to be confident? Show some fucking confidence.

I'm not talking about overblown hubris, the sort of thing we can't support right now. I'm talking about backing YOUR team regardless. We support, win lose or draw because that's what supporting is. It's not some fair weather shit! We're not Chelsea for fucks sake!

That's the attitude we as Liverpool fans should aspire to, as that's the benchmark that's been laid down by our Dads! Support the team, end of!

How is Lovren in the team? I just cant get my head around it.

Rodgers obviously thinks he will come good. I hope hes right but there's zero evidence to suggest this so far.

Oh shut up.

There isn't a single defender playing even close to well right now. If people have it in their heads that we're going to spend £20 million plus on a CB and then drop him and never play him again three months into his career here, you're going to be disappointed. The hope is that when Sakho is fit again, we put him in with Lovren, drop Johnson, stick with a settled back four and go from there.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Κolo Toure and Manquillo.

Hardly. Manquillo has certainly done enough to warrant inclusion over Johnson granted, but frankly if I went to a blind, crippled dogs home I'd see a good number of candidates who could say the same. And Kolo is Kolo. Probably our best performing CB in the last few months but again, against what?

Henderson has had a niggle so resting him is kind of understandable.

If that team is correct, then Johnson's inclusion is questionable to say the least.

I'm not saying that they are playing particularly well.
But we desperately need results right now so the players that are in a half-decent form should start instead of those that have been abysmal in the last few  months.

He really is a mystery now. His performance levels have been abysmal, Manquillo has not been setting the world on fire either but he's head and shoulders above Glen.

Stoke will be a big challenge . . .
Big thanks for this excellent analysis - posts like these always add to my enjoyment of the game.

BR is hopefully learning about managing his squad through multiple competitions and beginning to show a bit of the tactical flexibility that earned him such praise last season.  Sentimentality shouldn't really guide team selection but it probably will to some extent though I'd prefer to see Gerrard subbed on at the end in his forward role rather than playing 60 minutes from the start.

Goals are going to be tricky again, a shagged out Lambert who has nevertheless just landed a couple, or a fresh Borini who will be more tricky but liable to be bullied and has yet to make his mark? (I am assuming Balotelli's hamstring will not be risked).  We could perhaps do with both but I expect that the extra man in the middle will be preferred so I am not expecting to see two up top.

A Henderson-Can double pivot mentioned earlier would be interesting as they both offer a lot in terms of strength and in going forwards, although I imagine it is something that would have required some discipline and practice in training, and I am not sure that they will have had the time to work on that.  I expect Allen to feature alongside one of them, and get pulled later depending on how shot he is.

I hope Kolo does get another run out, it was refreshing to see someone marshalling the back four against Ludogorets and pushing them out - even if we did revert to sitting back at the end.  I am not sure I can bear to see Glen caught out by a long ball to Walters so I'd sooner see Moreno on the left.  Manquillo has shown a lot of determination and its a pity he missed his opportunity against Ludogorets but hopefully he has the legs to go again (rest against Leicester maybe).

I think we will win, although a clean sheet might be too much to hope for!

Thanks again to lankyguy for watching so many Stoke games so that we don't have to.   :)

IF Can starts it'll give him the opportunity to dominate that midfield especially if Lucas is the DM.
Hopeful the kid can step forward and deliver a performance worthy of the red shirt, his performance
against Chelsea didn't deserve a benching and I reckon he'll be well up for the match today.

Rumoured team...

Mignolet; Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno; Lucas, Can; Coutinho; Sterling, Lambert, Lallana
I'd like that but can't see it happen.

Reckon that is our best midfield - Lucas and Can, then some more interchanging behind the striker.

Would prefer Sakho but apparently still injured... not confident with Lovren at all. Toure has done great in the two games he's played, but he started brilliantly last year too and then fell to a level where posters on here wanted 'to never again see him in a red shirt'. Short memories and all that. Guess he's just at an age where it's hard to him to play more than once a week. I'd rather keep him for the odd great performance than see him falling apart again.

Johnson is a good header and relatively solid (concentration lapses and slow tracking back aside). Dunno why people are slagging Manquillo off, for a young lad (20) on loan in a foreign country he has been absolutely brilliant.
