Are you serious, how many people over 40 watch matches via streams?

Judging by the number of over 40's who post on RAWK id say there is a fair few that can use a laptop or PC so could stream. I would imagine from Al Jazeera's point of view though that they would want to avoid using Sky to broadcast the rights if they can as Sky will have them over a barrel, and it may take some of the shine off Al Jazeers's TV rights purchase if they won if they had to still use Sky, kind of blurrs the message.

PS i actually dont care that much, I dont pay for Sky Sports, and I doubt I would pay any other broadcaster regardless of how they broadcast.

So you need subscriptions for Sky, ESPN and now Al-Jazeera all for different games. Stupid.

There should be simple packages

1. 40% of games
2. <=65% of games
3. <=80% of games
4. All games

Broadcasters can choose up to that percentage made up of whoever is playing - that way regional divisions could show football on area while another channel could show the general interest game. Get rid of that stupid Saturday broadcasting rule and bring back some continuity. It would probably bring more money in as well. Instead of having two/three one package buyers, resell the same packages multiple times over.

Winds me up that you can't even watch the national game for free.

The age of 40 is a very distant and foggy memory in my
past but I go on streams to watch Liverpool.
Having lost lots of money in wages and upset a few
bosses over the decades through travelling to away
games then the ability to spend a few minutes
getting a decent stream is no problem.
Never listen to commentaries so the sound is always
muted.

Al Jazeera wants the full rights for the PL matches, not like the current ESPN/Sky packages where some matches are on ESPN and others on Sky. If Al Jazeera wins the broadcasting rights, you might as well fuck Sky off completely to be honest.

EU law introduced in 2007 states no single broadcaster can hold the rights to all the premier league packages at one time. that is how the sky - setanta/espn split came about.

Technically that arrangement only covered the last two rights auctions. It's highly unlikely that the Premier League would want to piss off the European Commission again, but I don't think there's any reason why one company couldn't win the bidding for every package of games, this time around.

didn't realise that only applied to the last two auctions, but like you say i can't see the PL wanting to go down the route of having the EC involved again.

Thats what I'll be doing for sure. Sky can fuck off with their rip off prices.

Don't know what sort of money they'll ask for but I'll happily subscribe to Al Jazeera.

Maybe pushing the bounds of reality and hope a lot
but what if Sky lost it`s licence, would it leave
the field open for Al Jazeera?

Close the thread, finally the objective of the thread is achieved: the age of our mods... old guys ..., no wonder they hate sky and can't deal with the fact that football is reinvented by Sky and anything before that is just pre-footy :P

I was quite surprised to hear how many over 40's watch matches via streams so point taken. How many families sit around a PC watching the match on a stream out of interest?

My family do. Well, the laptops hooked to the TV via a HDMI cable but it's the same thing essentially.

I've no doubt that the apple interest has substance. Apple will be releasing actual TVs in the next 12months if rumours are to be believed. They'll back this up by expanding apple tv as a service. I've no doubt that this will see them venture into broadcasting in some shape or form.

Satellite tv will die out over the next 10 years (if not sooner) as broadband speeds increase. Streaming is the future.

Apple has nothing on Al Jazeera, 2b for Al Jazeera is like a piss down the toilet, if they want the rights, they'd easily get it.

Apple has been accumulating cash for years and spending very little of it. They've got nearly $100 billion lying around, waiting to be used (for good or evil? Nobody knows). They could buy the Premier League itself and all of the clubs in it if they wanted. So 2b is nothing for them either.

Honestly though, whatever you think of iPhones, hipsters, and Steve Jobs, I'd take Apple over Murdoch any day of the week.
