Just watching Portugal v Cuba

Bruma for Portugal is a class above. We really could do worse than getting in there quickly

Not too shabby. Spain are cruising a bit though. They're through no matter what happens in this game.

edit: AND they have a comfy 2-0 lead.

Shouldn't just try, should actually demand it. We hold all the power, and tell them Jese is in the deal or they can fuck off.

Morata is overrated. Jese will be the star for whoever he signs for.

I was waiting France to dominate game, at least physically. Especially after Ghana dominated Spain. But France were themselves comprehensively dominated in the first half. In the second half, it got even, and you could say they started using their physical qualities. Or Spain wanted to play on the break.

Anyway, I didn't expect it to be so easy for Spain.

USA disappointed hugely.

...USA disappointed hugely.

Yes, we fucking well did.

Even with the excuses of injuries and not bringing any fit central defenders, that performance was far below expectations.

So Tab will probably get fired, and Jurgen will keep having phone books torn in half.

A win versus Eygpt should secure qualification for England, provided they get a few goals in the process. Hopefully the pack is shuffled - would like to see Pritchard on the right again and someone with width on the left. That would give us dual playmaker options with Barkley and Pritchard which should help with cutting through.

People aren't big on the England youth setup at the moment, but the u20's were very good second half versus Chile and the under 21's have talent, fuckup this summer or no fuckup. The main thing should be them getting proper games come August.

Not having any fit defenders is a pretty big excuse to be fair.

It's part of the issue.  The State-run ODP's have been developing good standard 15-18 year old player's for a while now, and the Collegiate system is begining to churn out a good standard of player. I am 100% sure, nay convinced, the US could have gathered some very good defenders from these programs.

Here is where I contradict myself utterly and entirely; I don't agree with either the statement that ODP or the college soccer set-up are turning out players who are  better than the past versions or good enough for international standard, yet somehow think Tab could have done better to find natural, fit central defenders for the tournament.

Only in US soccer, for certain...  ;)

Atletico are sorted for the next 10 years with Oliver Torres and Koke in the middle. Funny as that was a problem position for them for a while, now they just spat out 2 world class prospects from the academy in the space of a couple of years.

On a lighter note England are actually playing, yes "playing" well against Egypt. Could be a couple up by now. The Man Utd youngster, Larnell Cole looking particularly lively. Connor Coady also doing well.

English football is in a fucking mess. And sorry, much fun as it is for everyone to jump on the "overrated English players" bandwagon, it ain't the players. Nations with far worse players turn up and play better football than lads who end up in the top-flight.

The amount of money England has it should be amongst the top nations in the world. It's fairly clear it's not. The problem is that no longer about being competitive against Spain, Brazil, Italy or Germany. It's when teams like Norway, Iraq and Montenegro are playing better, more modern football than you throughout the different levels. That's a concern and that's not the players.

It is when Liverpool's players have to go off and get coached by them.
Apart from Gerrard, who, to be fair just wants to play football as you can tell he knows its all coming to an end and he just wants to play as much as he can, let alone play for England - my feel is that most, if not all England players play for the notoriety and the celebrity of status for playing for England, than actually playing for England. If you know what I mean.

From what I see of the England team, they'd be better getting a load of lads from the second division to play for England, at least they'd play and give a fuck. Well, thats what it looks like anyway. ;)

My point I suppose is - I don't think anyone, let alone Liverpool players, takes it all in, listens and is coached. And thats been like that for a what, good 20 odd years?..... since Bobby Robson was there?... A manager they respected and a time in football when the prem wasn't full of so many self-serving tramps. Well, not as bad as it is today, anyway.

^Questioning English players' passion to play for England is wrong, IMO. As is anything that has to do with passion. The problem is in football and not psychology.

There is a problem with coaching, but I don't think a good coach, even the best one, will fix all of England's problems. Ericsson wasn't bad when he came, was he? But he didn't make England a particularly superb team. The same with Capello, one of the best coaches around, he came, and England looked more solid. But it wasn't as if they looked like world beaters.

The problem is a combination of coaching and footballing abilities. English players are used to playing high tempo football without stops. International football is not like that, the games aren't 100 mph like in England. The games have lots of stoppages, it's slower because the opponents keep the ball when they have it. So when England get it, they should also keep it, and not rush with it, which they usually do. There needs to be 1-2 playmakers, who do that, if other players are incapable of doing that. England's game looks patchy, players look a bunch of individuals and not a team, the game is very patchy. There's no pattern to the play. I don't think this is due to lack of passion.

The problem with England is the hype that gets thrown onto the lads shoulders from a young age.

Look at any other media outlet in the world when talking about their national team and I can guarantee that none more so than the English media will bleet on about how pulling on the shirt brings an almighty responsibility, how when a mistake is made, it gets crucified for fucking years, nevermind months in the papers everytime there's an international game coming up.

The passion or the coaching isn't the problem, it's the expectation and hype that goes with playing for the national team, it sets everyone up for an almighty fall when things inevitably go tits up and just puts un-needed pressure onto the shoulders of the younger lads who should be concentrating on the football than what the papers might say if they fuck up.

Okay England just doesn't have the talent to compete with likes of Spain  but they shouldn't be losing or drawing with teams like Iraq, Israel and Norway etc. With Capello there were some good signs, okay England lost in the WC but his win% was the best an England had and he did make England solid and his track record shows that his teams can play some decent stuff going forward. Under coaches like Hodgson, Taylor and Pearce they are bound to hover around 10-20 ranking worldwide.

Thats not true is it. All teams put pressure on young players, think of players like Thiago or Isco and the hype they got going into U21 euros. They lived up to it while England players didn't.
