The American stream I've got has Tony Gayle saying he's the one they want to have the ball as he's not comfortable with it at his feet....Errm yeah, whatever you say!

Cheers
Jon

thats like a default quote for the commentators/expert pundits whenever the defender is tall and gangly. Remembered the same being said about Sakho as well.

I don't know about you guys but I have no idea who this Matip fella was before he signed for us. He was a complete mystery to me. The fact that we got him on a free told me maybe something wasn't right. Looking at him so far perform for us, looks like we got a deal and schalke got ripped off.

I like all the praise here about matip but lets just not go overboard. The season is long and so far he has been a standout performer.  Lets see if he can keep his performance consistent.

It's a Liverpool forum, he's playing very well, what do you expect?

Why put a dampner on it, no harm in fans enjoying the performances of a player.  I mean, people are quick to get on their cases when things don't go well aren't they.

Nah, you're alright mate, he deserves all the praise and over-hyped comments he gets at the moment. Barely put a foot wrong so far this season and when teams like City are spending £50m on every defender they come across then it makes fans all the more excited about this particular bit of business. We got him for free because we were proactive, that's all.

Why or when did it become a "thing" that we shouldn't get over excited about anything good connected with our Club?

It's bad when someone's playing well, it's bad when we're top of the league, it's bad that we have a decent squad with proper options off the bench, it's bad that we have an amazing manager.

Why??

Just enjoy what's happening now, stop worrying about what might happen in future when a lot of the pleasure comes from the journey not just arriving at the destination.

That's Van Dijk for me, but he is certainly up there.

different style defenders, i think van djk is slightly tougher than Matip but Matip is the better footballer by far, would compliment each other nicely  ;D

I feel he's the only player on the team that is indispensable at the moment. Our record with and without him is scary.

3 games without him in the team: 9 goals conceded
11 games with him in the team: 9 goals conceded

Palace away the only game with him in the team where we conceded more than one goal. If he plays every game from now to the end, we'll laugh our way to the title.

Yikes!

The Cameroon manager Hugo Broos on Matip:

...“But in the meantime I’ve heard that he is now prepared to make a comeback and so I am going to go and see him again."

maybe we could do a deal and send Sakho and one of the goalies  ;D

At least he would most likely miss the next tournament in January as he hasn't played a part in their qualifying campaign, so I doubt Broos would want to unsettle the squad he has.

Very difficult with Hendo(I think it was) getting a touch on it. Split second decision, that.

Still think he's great!

It's the only real weakness he has shown so far - that he can sometimes be caught flat footed by an unpredictable bounce. But generally speaking, he reads the game superbly.

Like what I see from him. He looks calm and I like that from CBs. Our best CB and very important for us.

A steal. Hyypia was in the crowd today and I definitely think Matip's our classiest centre back since Sami. I don't think it's too premature to say that. He oozes confidence and class. He played three of four passes today that a top midfielder would have been proud of

Looked like he was on stilts reacting to the flight of the ball for their second goal. Still he's class and he's barely put a foot wrong, the least of our worries.
