Fucking hell Timbo you'd sent this thread down hill until that bit of Badfinger  ;D

Not sure whether to respond in full to this or treat it with the contempt it so richly deserves.

I'll try the latter for the time being.

Pop you say?......

Surely this was also burnt into your head back then, utter tosh musically, but annoyingly catchy..

Timbo, don't know if you (or anyone else) ever listened to the Keith Skewes show, What's New, on Radio one back in the late 60's and early 70's, it used to be on around 4.30 in the afternoon on perhaps a Friday I think and played all the latest tracks.

Anyway, this was the theme tune...it might bring it all back to you...

Oh yeah

They used to play that Lou Christie number at the Beachy for a while. Not sure if it was because I was actually dead spit of him!!! Also not sure why they filmed it next to Goodison park!

And yeah remember that tune - how the fuck did you dig that out!!

For those Faces fans, this live at the beeb set is outrageous. Recorded in 72, the opening number 'three button hand me down' shows why they were revered; tight as a gnats chuff. Lane and Stewart sparring with each other on stage, with Woody keeping the peace. Jones and McLagen just smashing it, cool as you like. Fucking superb

I guess it depends on your criteria but they're right up there whatever criterion you choose to apply. I mean the Small faces themselves were amazing and I loved Steve marriot but the addition of Rod and Woody took them to another level.

Am not sure which one he was Timbo ,been a long time since we spoke about it, will ask him next time we speak.
Seem to love the same sort of music m8. loved Marmalade. anyone remember the News of the world front pages expose about them that finished them over night.   top group till then and loved all there music.
Loved Tim Burrows, fantastic singer who would make any song sound better, very down to earth, remember him saying in a TV interview even after love grows he was reluctant to pack in his job, wasn't wooed by stardom.

Great thing about all these old songs. many still sound as good as ever but they all take you back to memory's you haven't thought about in years.
I don't know why but me and M8s always loved doing a rendition of this great song when we were bevied walking down Scottie road on the way home from town.
Obviously must have sounded rubbish but that didn't stop us taking turns singing each verse while the rest of us did the backing vocals. :)

And yeah remember that tune - how the fuck did you dig that out!!

We used to try and play it back then in the band I was in but since we didn't have a Hammond, could never afford one, it was never quite the same.

Like many, though we were all only 14 back in '69, a few friends who lived almost next door and I formed a sort of band and as was par if not mandatory for the times, it was primarily 'English' blues orientated, so most of those Rod tunes, certainly the Long John Baldry band stuff he sang on, as well as shedloads of the usual classics from that era, were avidly listened to and devoured and regurguitated, usually in totally unrecognisable form due to our total crapness. But you have to go through all that to learn...

Our bass player, still a very good close friend, is still travelling, he sometimes backs Chris Farlow (mentioned above) and also Van Morrison,  though spends most of his time on the road around Europe playing blues standards with a reasonably famous blues band these days, while our guitar player who was my best man and I his, is a well respected producer/composer these days. We all still meet up occasionally when we can.  I'm currently the odd one out as far as close and direct day to day involvement in music is concerned, I haven't really done anything serious since I played in an orchestral concert at the Phil about 10 years ago, though that might change shortly, I have plans...

...Also not sure why they filmed it next to Goodison park!

Best singer, EVER, no contest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PLq0_7k1jk

You won't hear anyone in this thread disputing the Big 'O' s greatness mate. As for the best ever - can there ever be such a thing? Seen him at The Empire in '63 - supporting The Beatles. It was a year or so before Pretty Women. His big closer was 'It's Over'. Hit the killer notes without moving his feckin lips.

Burrows was certainly a rare one Oldie lad. Never knew that though. Always wondered why he was in multiple groups but always away from the limelight. Remember singing Love Grows every week on the Kop. Everyone got a buzz when it came on the tannoy and everyone knew all the words. Great memories.

Guess I've got a full time job on here with these videos!!

What I can recall very vividly about What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For' was it dropping to number 2 in the hit parade when replaced at number 1 by Anthony Newley's 'Why'

so it went

1. Why
2. What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For'

It must have tickled me back then the difference in the respective title lengths as the image of the daily mirror chart is scorched onto my memory. How fucking sad is that.

Terry Huff...this is my youth, not Slade or Bowie, obscure singers from...DC, IIRC. I'm sure this is the a+b sides from the single release...actually the second track is the longer LP version.

Should just post the Remember My Song LP...I've loved this since the day I was given it...he's another that doesn't get the plaudits he deserved...it's impossible to not feel good after listening tho this cat. I last saw him play live in Manchester in the mid 90's and he was simply stunning.

Ah Labi....funnily enough I posted this in the what are you listening to thread just the other week...Bobby noticed it.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/dlFRIg469ng&amp;v=en_US&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/dlFRIg469ng&amp;v=en_US&amp;fs=1</a>

He wrote some good well crafted stuff...It Must Be love covered by Madness as well as Crying Laughing Loving Lying and (Something inside) So Strong.

..."geezer music".
Gertcha!

I also posted this....seeing as Marmalade have been mentioned again (yes, that NoW scandal stuffed them, but bonus points if anyone can name the Footy players involved in the Holly Lodge scandal around the same time)...

...So, woke up this morning with this oldie going through my brain...

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/MeMS8SuHPs0&amp;v=en_US&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/MeMS8SuHPs0&amp;v=en_US&amp;fs=1</a>

For some reason, before listening to it again after all these years, the harmonies had sounded in my head more CSN&Y ala  Marrakesh Express (might dig that out shortly and have a listen).

I suppose there is some vague resemblance to CSN&Y in parts, a similar syncopated feel, though the ancient promo film with that woman prancing around looks seriously grim if not hysterically laughably bad these days...

Marmalade (originally called The Gaylords! I kid you not) were one of those Scottish bands from the same period that also spawned the quite superbly talented Gallagher & Lyle (now there's an album I might dig out and re-listen to, Breakaway, so many good tunes on it)  though Marmalade were always more the well crafted Pop genre than the slightly Folk Rock tinged MOR G&L.

Some also may remember Marmalade being crucified by the NoW paper with the ‘Sex on Tour’ allegations and never really recovering from the bad publicity, groupies, wild parties etc.

But right now, I'm onto some more serious stuff...Mr Bonkers and his crew...

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/rioYOoFqyAo&amp;v=en_US&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/rioYOoFqyAo&amp;v=en_US&amp;fs=1</a>

The quirky B side to that single was quite good too...

Have you caught Deja Nu one of his more recent albums Sam?

They do two fantastic doo wop/acapella Springsteen covers.

...I'm way too young to remember most of the stuff on this page....I never thought I'd ever be able to use those words in a sentence again. ;D

I remember hearing some of the tracks from my mom's playing of them, especially the Vincent LP....that's a stone classic.

Not really there just yet.
Only a matter of time before we get some Ninna and Fredrick. there bloody marvelous them, far better than that Beatles rubbish. that's what I was told anyway. :)

The original and best version. If you listen to the lyrics and know the story of why it was written then you'll now why it becomes such a better song when sung by a woman.

Before I personally leave the '50's and pre Beatles '60's behind to venture into Merseybeat and early '60's territory I have to post some Billy Fury and Lonnie Donegan to mark their incredible contribution to the later evolution of pop/rock music.

Billy, because he was Britain's one truly authentic rocker. And not just because he happens to have been Scouse but because he was what it said on the tin.

Lonnie, because if he hadn't pioneered skiffle in the incredible way he did then I doubt whether many of the fuckers who've been so proudly featured on these past few pages would have seen the light of day in the guise of the great pop/rock artists they turned out to be.

Incidentally as an aside for any drummers - have a look at the all too brief Nick Nicholls solo halfway through Lonnies gamblin man link - reminds me of the criminally underrated Jerry Allison.

First the amazing Billy Fury

And then the equally incredible Lonnie Donegan
