Spiral Series 3
« on: March 23, 2011, 11:37:56 pm »
Great news, BBC Four is going to replace The Killing on Saturday nights with the long-awaited series 3 of Spiral

I reckon this should be a more than adequate replacement for those with subtitled-police-procedural-withdrawal after The Killing finishes.

Plus also this heralds the return of a certain flame-haired, naughty lawyer, Joséphine Karlsson played by Audrey Fleurot.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I mean, Oui. Oui. Oui.

Fantastic programme. I urge anyone who is a fan of police procedurals (or quality French programming in general) to catch this. The first two series were superb and kudos to the Beeb for partially funding it.

Thanks for the heads up, leftfooter.

Brillant.  Been looking all over the internet for good news on this.  I can not  wait for this.  Absolutely love it - my favourite TV programme.  Ever.

I prefer the prosecutor ;) (name escapes me right now)
Unfortunately, even the most beautiful love stories finish, but they leave behind a lot of wonderful memories, like when my M1 and I kissed for the first time at Welkom, when she looked straight into my eyes and told me 'I love you'.

I'm guessing you're referring to Pierre Clément (Grégory Fitoussi) for similar reasons leftfooter cited Audrey Fleurot?  ::)

Surely Gilou is the most interesting character on the show, while the flame-haired lawyer is pure evil incarnate and - I must say - very convincingly played by the agreeable Fleurot  :wave

Gilou is definitely intriguing - was is it series 1 that he was snorting coke with that prostitute?
Laure Berthaud for me is the most interesting.  Her private llife is a mess, yet her policing skills, along with her fiesty personality make her the most strong willed person on the show

underscore - yeah, that's the character I was referring to. I don't know what's French for "maverick, loose cannon", but he epitomises it.

And Laure is a beautiful portrayal of complex characterisation. Looks like she had a hard paper round in her youth.

One more shout - also think the guy who plays Juge Roban is superb.

Caught up with both series last week after finding the DVDs on Amazon going cheap.

Brilliant stuff, I'll be interested to see if Gilou's going to go back to his old ways (he seemed remarkably straight in series 2, considering he'd

ended series 1 taking an overdose and seemed suicidal

).

Be interested to see if Sammy is still there - although the thought of giving Laure a stable relationship doesn't seem right somehow. And I kind of swing between finding Karlsson ridiculously attractive and having the shit scared out of me.

There were some strange loose ends left at the end of series 1 that were never picked up in series 2 -
Spoiler
why did Karlsson destroy the evidence that exonarates Leroy of rape? And what was with Judge Roban's strange conversation with Pierre at the end, about him being 'his favourite'? And just how does Roban know so much about swingers clubs? ;-)

Brilliant show, should ease the pain of The Killing finishing anyway. On a shallow note,

far preferred Laure when she had long hair.

Thanks for recommending this. Would I need to watch the previous series to begin watching this? If so, I'll track down the DVDs.

Nice one  :wave

I saw the second series before the first, and while in retrospect it would have been useful to know the back story, both series are largely self-contained in terms of their story arcs.

So to answer your question I shouldn't have thought you'd *need* to watch the previous two series, but be good to yourself and do it anyway  ;)

In an unpleasant location, the body of a young woman is discovered. A detective is called to investigate, who brings not only a high level of expertise, but also a slightly careworn, been-round-the-block level of suspicion and world-weariness. And so begins another quality European detective drama: flawed hero/heroine, institutional cynicism and corruption, wheels within wheels. The crime is solved, of course, but somehow the solution is all faintly tinged with regret, collateral damage and moral compromise....

Enjoy  :wave

I thought both episodes were great - sets up the premise for series 3 nicely.

Spent most of episode 1 wondering where Karlsson was, but she shows up eventually in episode 2. The case is as grim as ever and episode 1 in particular plunges new depths in bleakness.

Laure also seems ever more troubled (there's no sign of Samy, so I guess that didn't work out for her) and even Clemente is incredibly disillusioned.

And, the most important development of all:
Spoiler
Laure's grown her hair long again. Hooray!

Brilliant two episodes.  I like how Tintin has been given more lines - in the other two series' he was always seen but never heard.
This two episodes make Judge Roban seem more human too......

FINALLY got around to watching the first episode of S3. Loving the fact it has picked up pretty much from where it had left off, that Gilou has seemingly become even more of a twat than he was before and....

.... that I still have another three episodes in the can to catch up on. Tres bien!

Now watched episode 2 of the third series. Only four to catch up on already, but like a fine wine such delights are to be savoured.

Highlights of this episode include:

Spoiler
Clément's enforced career descent due to refusing to play the game. Idealistic? Naive? Both? And by contradicting Machard will a similar fate await Roban?

Laure's impassioned plea to Gilou and her selfishness uncovered when Gilou sees her note about him on the assignment transfer document.

Gilou's interrogation style in sobering up Tyson. Yep, that'll usually do it.

And Josephine is back and as corrupt, off-hand and cold as ever.

Marvellous.

I'm enjoying this series very much. We seem to have gotten further into the characters' private lives this year, and we know far more about Laure, Gilou and TinTin, Judge Roban and Pierre.

For instance I was astounded to find out Laure was married last season. I had no idea, I just assumed she was single because of her behaviour.

If I was the big policeman or the Arab police lady in Laure's team who show up in a few episodes I'd be worried. They've got the look of Star Trek extras in a red shirt on an away mission. Someone's gonna get it at some point, and it's not going to the Laure, Gilou or TinTin (I hope).

I wonder what the Met would say about British policemen being portrayed in the same way that the French detectives behave in Spiral? I reckon there would have been a right ruckus about it in the press .

A really good series again.

Once again they found really outstanding actors for the guest roles. In season 2 the actor playing Aziz the rapper/gang leader was brilliant.
This season the actor playing Ronaldo was excellent. He really oozed evil. Plus the Albanian guys Niko and his mates. They were utter bastards.

I liked the more in depth look into the characters back stories, and how they all ended up feeding back into the legal system.
Judge Roban ended up being a bit of a judicial badass, which I didn't see coming.

I liked the Josephine/Pierre/Szabo storyline too. Josephine just can't seem to extricate herself from the dodgy side of the law.
The whole programme is full of flawed characters, with Berthaud and her headlong pursuit of Ronaldo, dragging along Gilou and TinTin.

Apparently the next season is going to be based in the world of politics.

Loved it from start to finish.  The emotion on Laure's face when she finally catches Ronaldo was beautifully done.
Gilou stamping on Vlad, even made me wince.

"Maradonna.  Maradonna" Niko, after he gets off the phone to Ronaldo.  Made me smile

And Josephine Karlsson isn't always such a bitch.
