Anyone watching this on Beeb 2? James May just done a speed test in a Bugatti Veyron. 250MPH for a road car :o

Anyone wanna chip into a consortium? We only need about 3/4 of a million to buy one.

Not only did Koenigsegg send that car back afterwards, they actually put a rear wing on, to get a better/more stable time.

Bugatti are just worried that it won't be top of the power lap table. ;D

I prefer Fifth Gear. Their car reviews are alot better, and at least Vicki Butler-Henderson, Jason Plato & Co. actually know how to drive.

And no way is that Alfa Brera the best or most desirable car. Had one on loan a few months ago, and it doesn't drive anywhere near what you'd expect a £30k coupe to drive like.

5th gear is poor and very biassed from little bits of money being passed for better reviews

top gear is a great show, however i do question some of their final decisions on some of the car choices, but its all about opinion

5th Gear is not only shitter than Top Gear, but I'm pretty sure I'd rather watch something like Eastenders over it. It's crap.

That Bugatti is the finest piece of machinery I've seen on the road. Also, I think they cost £5m (or euros) to make- they make a huge, huge loss on them. Which is probably why they don't want to hand it to the tame racing driver, some say he...  ;)

Doing that speed test was truly amazing. Breathtaking in fact. Love the show and glad it's back.

Chrisakes!!!! Lets get one thing straight.

As a proper car programme, Fifth Gear is absolutely lightyears ahead of Top Gear. You only have to look at any of the road tests they do. The Z4M/Cayenne or the S2000/R-Type tests were classic examples. Their knowledge, technical expertise, and driving abilities (2 former BTCC drivers, and 1 ex-rally driver) put them miles ahead of old pot belly Clarkson and his raggedy crew. And for the record, Jeremy Clarkson knows absolutely fuck all about cars (as his Sunday Times column will testify).

As an entertainment programme, Top Gear is alot more popular. But its for the mainstream masses who aren't so much interested in cars but the basic 'oooh ahhh' entertainment value. They're the sort of people who think a Ford Escort with a spoiler on the back of it is a great car. You only have to look at the sketches they do such as the exploding caravan sketch, and the 'build a stone fireplace and chimney' in the back of a car to know its not even a remotely serious car programme.

And Top Gear is scripted, pre-produced, and edited to death to make it look vaguely entertaining. Record live my fucking arse! So in yer face Top Gearites!

Probably all true (dont watch either that often, to be honest), but what made me laught was Mr S' lass laying down the law so defiantly :D

It's boring and the tests they do are crap. And boring. I used to think the old format was alright, and good to watch. But now it's just plain shite. What's with that fucking cafe thing? And lovejoy!? And you point out that Jeremy Clarkson doesn't know about cars?  :lmao

Fair enough, Tiff Needel and Plato are good- I enjoyed watching a few of their car review thingys, but the rest of that programme is shite. Top Gear gives you the entertainment, who cares if they don't always talk about practicality, and all that shite. I just want to see fast cars getting thrashed around. With no "end of part 1/2/3" shite thrown in!

I cant stand 5th gear. But the way they've quite blatantly tried to copy top gears format is quite amusing.

Interesting thing. Way back when this current style of Top Gear was in it's first series (few years ago now), there was this little 'cryptic, but not so cryptic' thing that was going on between the shows. Clarkson was driving and said something like "but when you change from 5th Gear to Top Gear, everything goes mental..." I watched it and thought "yer cheeky bastard"  ;D. Next 5th Gear episode, that posh bloke who used to be on 5th Gear (forget his name) was doing a car test and said "Sure Top Gear may well be fast, but everything changes when you slip down to 5th Gear" and he sped off.

At the time I told my mate and he didn't notice it. But aparently Clarkson said that it was a 'thing' they were doing between the 2 shows when he was on a chat show.

For anyone with NTL, get onto the new on demand thingy, I missed the first episode of the new series so watched it last night (coincedently missing the 2nd), and it's free  :wave

Will go and watch the 2nd now if it's on there already. Loved the Bugatti Veyron since Clarkson raced Hammond and May in it from London to France or vice versa (and won).

Fave top gear clip though has to be this.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTeBuwVipfo  ;D

I just want to see fast cars getting thrashed around. With no "end of part 1/2/3" shite thrown in!

The cafe format is shit, and Lovejoy is as dull as ditchwater as a presenter but then he doesn't do any proper car reviews. The only time I've seen him do a review is when he had to try out that 3 wheeled Honda scooter around London, and he was suprisingly quite good - his slightly dopey demeanour suited the bike.

As for 'fast cars being thrashed about' that summarises the major difference between the two programmes. If you want the thrashed about thing and no expert knowledge about the cars - which it seems is what most people want - then Top Gear will be your thing. But if you want proper information and driving knowledge about individual models, then it has to be Fifth Gear.

Top Gear = TV equivalent of 'Max Power' magazine.
Fifth Gear = more akin to 'Evo'.
