I'd make some joke about him being able to walk freely into Everton's trophy room and steal the silverware...............

But there is none! ho ho ho Boom Boom!

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here/ and i'm most obliged to you for making it clear/ that i'm not here

Congrats to Stevie!

But...!

What does this "freedom" entitle Stevie G to?
Does it mean he's able to walk around the place pissing up trees or something?
I never did quite get the whole point of these things...

Thers is no point really but it's what cities and politicians do, make themselves look important. Publicity is the name of the game.

Quote

The old City of London One of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence today is the granting of the Freedom of the City of London. It is believed that the first Freedom was presented in 1237.

The medieval term 'freeman' meant someone who was not the property of a feudal lord, but enjoyed privileges such as the right to earn money and own land. Town dwellers who were protected by the charter of their town or city were often free - hence the term 'freedom of the City'.

Just saw this entry in Wikipedia:

Steven Gerrard, the captain of Liverpool FC was given the Freedom of the borough of Knowsley in December 2006. One of his privileges after being given the Freedom is that he is allowed to drive his sheep down the main street of his home town
Someone should do the right thing - go back in time to 1992 and destroy the codes to Championship Manager before it is ever released

GERRARD ASSURED OF AT LEAST ONE AWARD IN 2007
Paul Rogers 16 December 2006
Barcelona may stand in the way of Steven Gerrard leading Liverpool towards a second Champions League final in three years but the Reds captain is already assured of one award in 2007 – the Honorary Freeman of the borough of Knowsley.
Members of Knowsley Borough Council voted unanimously to honour the England international at a meeting on Wednesday with Council leader Ron Round explaining the award was just recognition for all the Liverpool star has achieved in the game so far in his career.

"Steven is an exceptional talent and a real ambassador for the borough of Knowsley," he said of the midfielder who was brought up in Huyton. "Despite his phenomenal success on the pitch, he is still a Huyton boy at heart and is the first to acknowledge the influence of his roots. He’s very highly thought of in the area and in my opinion would be thoroughly deserving of this honour.”

The ceremony, due to be arranged for early 2007, will mark the first time the honour has been bestowed since 1988 and just the fourth occasion since Knowsley Council was formed in 1974. The title of Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Knowsley is the highest accolade which can be bestowed by Knowsley Council on one of its citizens.

Kirkby,Huyton and parts of St Helens are all boroughs of Knowsley and Bootle,Netherton and Crosby are all boroughs of Sefton although people regard them as liverpool which is fine, all are outside the boundary of Liverpool having said that we are all part of Merseyside. Steven Gerard was born in Whiston hospital and lived in Huyton virtually all his life and has since moved up Formby way he has in fact never lived in Liverpool similar to Jamie Carragher who was brought up in Bootle. Although both players are not from Liverpool both are considered local lads which is fine.

I think this was smart timing by Knowsley Council, reminding everyone that scouse Steven Gerrard comes from their borough, gives the blues some ammo when the inevitable jobes start.
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs
