Local lower leagues..
« on: March 2, 2023, 10:47:16 pm »
Life throws you some curve balls from time to time, and this coming saturday it looks like I am spoilt for choices.. Planning to get to a match and Tranmere was the obvious choice, but seen them a couple of times, so started to look around a bit. Looks like Bootle, Prescot Cables, AFC, Litherland and at a stretch Vauxhall Motors are the possibilities. Any recommendations from the local experts on where to go ? Would be happy to go to all; but was just thinking of easiest from town and also where there could be a decent crowd and some fun !. thanks

I'm by no means an expert mate, but I would suggest a visit to Marine. A quick look at the fixtures shows that that their tenants, AFC Liverpool, are at home tomorrow.

There's quite a bit to look at there, including the board with all the names of the people who bought a Spurs ticket, the new bar and restaurant that they had done with the proceeds, and there is even the TV Boards that forms the backdrop off where the managers where interviewed after that game.

You may want to leave it until Marine are at home though, if that's what you'd prefer? Especially as AFC only get a very small crowd.

The ground is handy as it's a 10 minute walk from Blundellsands and Crosby station, but I would suggest getting off at Waterloo and going to the excellent Liver pub, then it's a 15-20 minute walk. There is also a pub, the Edinburgh, right by the ground.

I'd also go to Marine. The Bug (Edinburgh) is a nice pub for a drink before the game, as you said.

I've also watched South Liverpool FC before, after stumbling across them playing at Jericho Lane Sports Hub on Otterspool Drive L17 as I walked past.

The road the stadium on has a decent bus route to city centre too, if you don’t fancy a walk for the train (after a few pints).

Liverpool signed the amateur Jimmy Case from South Liverpool for a nominal £500 in 1973.

Ended up at Bootle; wasn't as good as the sunday but a very nice day out. 8 pounds entry; friendly people; the burgers and bevvies were good as well !

Any recommendations for lower/non-league footy on the Wirral? There's Tranmere of course but they don't particularly appeal. Marine/AFC Liverpool is definitely worth a trip but it's definitely a day trip and all the associated cost/planning that requires with young kids.

Cammel Lairds always have a decent team

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cammell_Laird_1907_F.C.

And you probably have a local team in the West Cheshire league and maybe the business houses?
I’ll leave it to the Wirral Jedis to let you know more. But my only observation is the Merseyside Saturday and Sunday leagues are generally a great standard. The top divisions in all the leagues have some very good teams.

The Pineapple team still going? The pub on Park Road’s been shut for years.

They go the Willow Bank every Sunday for their post match roast and pints. Good lads and they got knocked out in the semis a few weeks ago. 1 - 1 and they had a lad sent off in the 60th minute and conceded two late goals. Iam nit sure if they've got anything to do with the pub on Park Road though. Their nickname is the Chunks  ;D

City of Liverpool FC anyone ? The Purps have a decent following, mainly of reds who got disillusioned with the Premier League and they play at the Berry St Garage stadium in Bootle. Nearest pub is the Queens next to Aintree racecourse about a ten minute walk, with Aintree station just across the road from the pub.

Think Ashville have just had a promotion up to the tenth tier.  5-10 minute walk from Wallasey Village train station, decent parking near the ground too, not far from J1 on the M53 either.  Got one last home game, though it is on the 15th so depends how you feel about seeing footy on that particular day.
