It's been mentioned many times and is an obvious one, but Owen is a great shout.

The lad could have been our striker for years and with Gerrard, Alonso etc supporting him, he would have been unstoppable. Can't help thinking what Rafa could have done in his first few years with Reina, Carra, Alonso, Gerrard and Owen down the middle.

Let's not do that boring debate on semantics. You probably have Carragher down as legend rather than the more truthful 'great servant'.

I agree Luis has a very special place in our history because of that CL win. Same with Dudek. Don't care about his flaps elsewhere, that double save in the 117th minute of ET gives him a place in a legends list for me.

But Carragher is 100% certainly a legend too. Whatever your feelings about his ability today etc. there would certainly have been no CL without him that season either. That Chelsea Semi he was immense. And he's been here a long time and put a lot in.

As for those who could have been legends... Torres, Jones and Jari would be my shouts. Maybe Masch too.

Rob Jones - Injures ruined him, Rat face wouldn’t of have got a look in for England had he been fit more!  :(
Nick Anelka - 50/50 choice between him and Diouf... the rest is history unfortunately ! :(
Harry Kewell - faded out of sight when a great career beckoned... great shame! :-\
Michael Owen - could of gone down in history for his entire career and not just the early year… his last choice in terms of the team he joined means he is confined to a life of abuse, all of his own doing im afraid.  >:(

Good call on Harry Kewell! Wow I remember when we signed him I was so excited. Phenomenal talent, but just couldn't stay fit.

He is a massive cock but he was some player, real shame we didn't get a few years out of him at his peak.

Ian Rush, I was heartbroken when he left and a little dissapointed when he came back as I thought the Barnes,Beardsley, Aldo team was the best Liverpool I have ever seen and he broke it up.

I consider Alonso a legend...he was here long enough and did so much for our club. I think the two guys from my time of watching Liverpool would probably have to be Macscherano and Torres. Mascherano is a great players and one of the best at his position in the world. I just wish Torres stayed a little bit longer.

This is very true. In Mascherano and Torres at least, we had the best players in their positions in the world. Harder for Alonso and Gerrard to claim that as there were some very good central midfielders, deep-lying or attack minded.

But isn't it the point of the thread? Not that they are/were legends, but that they could have been legends?

In that case, Luis could have been a legend...
That's exactly what I was saying, could've. Others have said is.

I've always maintained that if Souness hadn't been a total gobshite when he finished playing, he'd be competing with the likes of Kenny as one of our all time greatest servants.

Look at this tally:

League Championship winners: 1978–79, 1979–80, 1981–82, 1982–83 & 1983–84
European Cup winners: 1977–78, 1980–81 & 1983–84
League Cup winners: 1981, 1982, 1983 & 1984

In terms of players who didn't fulfil their potential, Stan Collymore had all the attributes to be the greatest England forward ever. Unfortunately he had an IQ of 7.

Think people misunderstood the meaning of this thread (or maybe i did??), we are talking about players who were on their on becoming great players for the club

anyway i would say Luis Garcia, Collymore, Cisse (thought he could be massive for us if not for his personality and the transitional period he was whilst at the club) and Anelka.

You got it right mate.

This thread is not about legends. Its about players who could/should have been but weren't because of unforseen circumstances, ie Injury, bad management, mental issues or they just didn't perform for whatever reason

Here's an example:

Unforseen : Collymore, personality issues
Injury: Rob Jones
Bad Management : No to Anelka, yes to Diouf

Those three players should have been legends for us but didnt make it for a number of reasons.

This will be controversial to some, but I put Aquilani in the bracket of 'should have been'.

To me, there's more to being a legend than just playing well for years.
Real legends have that something extra personality wise.
Kenny is a Legend for what he did back both on the pitch and off.
Barnes is a Legend for what he endured and his continuing loyalty to the club.
Rafa is a Legend for all that he did.

With this in mind, I'm thinking of players that seem to make a connection with the fans. In the modern squad. Pepe, Luis, Jamie, Jay Spearing, Lucas, Daniel, and Dirk all seem to have this at the moment. Stevie to a lesser degree because he only really shows any personality on the pitch.

But of course talent and longevity are vital parts of this too.

Of players that had the touch of madness but also seemed Red through and through,
Who had the talent (or at least appeared to),
and who join early enough that they could have played for us for years:
Ryan Babel - seemed to have bags of talent. was outspoken but sound. was a bit bonkers. (For one reason or another, his development stalled and he was inconsistant)
Djibril Cissé - Had bags of speed, seemed like he was a top striker, was a crazy as a mansion full of frog. (Never managed to turn his speed and shooting skills into the world beater he could have been)
Raul Meireles - loads of talent, seemed devoted to the cause, looked like some crazed gay biker on acid (But turned out to be a bit of snake)
Stephen Warnock - looked for a while as if he might be the answer at left back, local lad, took no prisoners (but sadly didn't quite develop enough)
Oh, and of course Torres who could have had it all.
A new era begins.
Let's be patient,
It feels good,

Recent history the obvious one is Torres, what an utter, utter fuck up he made

Going back a tad, Anelka (why the fuck we didn't sign him permanent is still a mystery to me), Owen, incredible for us early on but turned into an utter turd of a human

We saw Owen's prime and in a few more years I think he'll be considered a legend for us.
2001 triple and the league cup in 2003 - he was hugely important in those.

Torres.

This may come a surprise to some but I'm going to say Titi Camara, he held us together up front when we had a litinary of injuries, at one point I think he was the only uninjured forward we had. Scored some spectacular goals as well. He also scored the winning goal against West Ham the day after his father's death. A legend in my eyes already but I think he was harshly dealt with in the end and was let go too soon!

Could've pushed on to greater things imho

Just add that he is the only player's name I have ever had signwritten on the back of a LFC shirt!  8)

...
Litmanen

Belting shout that...I had such high hopes for the lad! Similar to Morientes in alot of ways, arrived with a big reputation having done the business on the continent but for what ever reason it just didn't happen for either of them here!

Owen should have been a legend, but too many wrong decisions in his career have mean't he isn't regarded as one.
John Toshack doesn't seem to get much recognition on here, you hardly see him mentioned and Keegan, although he probably is classed as a legend is only mentioned fleetingly.

some of the players being mentioned on here in conjunction with the word 'Legend' are causing me to shake my head so much by Weetabix is in danger of falling out.....

A simple guideline......here are a few Legends:

Graeme Souness
Roger Hunt
Kevin Keegan
Kenny Dalglish
Ian Rush
Ron Yeats
John Barnes

Here are a few that have mentioned as possible legends:

Mellor
Anelka
Sissoko
Babel
Warnock
Cisse

Aside from the mentioned Collymore, Jones, Torres etc, 2 players from the early 90s for me.

Nicky Tanner who just started to get a regular slot in the side before injury ended his career.
Mark Wright, who was an England international and helped win the 92 FA cup, but between then and 96 I don't recall much of him (injuries and form?). We signed that trio of defenders (Babb, Ruddock and Scales) and he never got a look in...he did have a mini renaissance in the 96-97 season and played really well, but we never got to see the best of him.

Me.  I mean, I used to run about in my Umbro pinstripe shirt pretending to be a Liverpool player.  Mind you, I was 8 years old and turned out to be crap at footie.  Still, I could have been a legend if it hadn't been for my lack of talent.

Having said all that, I reckon I'd have been better than Sean Dundee or Erik Meijer.  Or Konchesky.  Or Poulsen.

In hindsight, I could have made it as a Liverpool player.  Dammit.  Lesson to be learned - Liverpool's standards when I was 8 were higher than they have been recently...
