So, when is the rest of the world going to look beyond the 'free' bit and realise we've got one of the top 4 defenders in the league here? Joel, Van Dijk, Alderweireld, Koscielny for me in any order. Top class.

Every time we concede from a set piece he'll revert to being average.

I'm tempted to say he is Klopp's best bit of business, the lack of fee will end up being seen as either flukey or genius. My money is on genius :)

Loved hearing him be commanding in the box. We've needed a leader and organiser in the box.

He's slotted in nicely and is only going to improve too.

Van Dijk is really good.  Our next buy from Soton.  😊

I love this player and what he's brought to the team.  Based on what I had read about him in the summer I was quietly confident he would add some much needed quality to our central defence.   Little did I know he would quickly become, far and away, our best defensive performer this early in the season.

Central defense is a position we've suffered at over the past decade compared to the top teams in the league.  How many of those who played for us during that period would have been in contention for the top teams on a consistent basis?  Probably none as I suspect that Hypia was the last such player (sorry Agger, Carragher).  We've had the forwards, and usually the midfielders, but not so much at the back.  If Matip keeps playing like this he's going to be top 5 in the league at this position.  It's no wonder he was named in the team of the year in Germany. As others have mentioned, our set piece issues are masking the great job this guy is doing for us.

I had given up on Lovren after his disastrous first year with us.  It's incredible how a loss of confidence can so completely affect a players performances.  However, he brought me back on board last year and he's continued again this year, but I still think this will be one of the positions Klopp goes back to improve in the next year or two, whether that is through a signing or the training/progression of someone like Joe Gomez.  All that said, I'd love to clone Matip and have two of them in the middle!

This game has truly gone mad when we're buying players from our academy.

I was thinking this but didn't want to do Lovren a disservice. But a pairing of Big Joel and Van Dijk...

Some player, this guy. Can't believe we've got him and Milner for free. Both have been quality this season, and it just proves money well spent can save you a shit load of money.

Really hope to see him on the score sheet soon. His goal tally last season for Schalke was impressive so hopefully he will bag a few soon.

I said it already - we already knew we were getting a top level defender in Matip (He was in the Bundesliga team of the year). If he hadn't been injured in preseason he would have slotted in from day 1 seamlessly.

We shouldn't let him off the hook for his (secondary) part in the first Palace goal, but what a signing. How can you not love this guy? In terms of my nerves while watching a match, he's basically a Valium.

The was no fault of his .He played a simple headed pass to Lovren who was under no pressure.

Lovren just made a big mistake by slicing it horribly .Shit like that happens and Lovren redeemed himself in style but in no way Matip was at fault for it .

It's madness. There must have been other teams in for him, but I don't remember any at the time? No that it matters, cos he's ours now.

He really is one hell of a centre half.

He was one of Jurgen's first signings technically. I think there would of been other clubs interested but it wouldn't be of no surprise if Klopp identified him as a potential signing shortly after he took over.

There are clubs spending about 50m for worse. Matip is the first defender/CB since Carra left that I don't feel like shitting myself when the ball is near him.

have anyone mentioned he is pretty good at the dark arts of defending yet? Makes defending looks like child play.

never have i seen benteke so frustrated before. Seems like Matip was winning everthing on the air and on the ground.

to top it all off..what a bloody nuclear boom of a header to break your EPL duck.

His lone rise from the jump was majestic as the ball connected with the forehead resulting in a bullet past the keeper.

That said, it was a 50-50 shot as Mandanda was very close to reaching them - Matip could learn a thing or two about controlling the direction of the header from watching a certain Finnish colossus (the header against Arsenal was jaw Dropping). Opponents would shit bricks whenever we get corners or free kicks.

All in all, he's settling in very well as one half of the twin towers in defense.
Someone should do the right thing - go back in time to 1992 and destroy the codes to Championship Manager before it is ever released
