Today....
« on: July 21, 2014, 11:18:49 pm »
Stevie stayed and Luis left.
I remember the panic setting in amongst us not so long ago at the prospect of another star striker leaving?! Where would we find a replacement at such short notice? How would the club survive? Well, Keegan left and Kenny came in and all was well.

Of course that fear reappeared with Torres, but I wonder if that whole episode, and how well we've played recently, has made us realise it really isn't the be all and end all when a star turns to shooting star and all that is left is the vivid burning tail of a memory of former glory.

So today when I read that Gerrard is to give up international football and Suarez is headed for tikitakatapas land, I noticed that my soul was at ease, at peace and the more important news of the two was Gerrard potentially lengthening his career at Anfield. Of course its easy when one cares not so much for the national team, but also that the prospect of Suarez heading off didn't set alarm bells ringing in the pit of my stomach where all football emotion seems to live. In a small bungalow.

The king is dead, long live the king they say, well cheerio Luis, like the previous small, waspish, silky soccer skilled Spaniard who amazed and delighted us (that goal v Juventus, come on now, just smashing...) you will be missed, but just as we watch your car disappear down the road, like leaving relatives, we will turn smiling into the home that is Anfield and are reminded that players come and go, but Liverpool is steadfast.

A bit like Stevie's intentions. Welcome back Gerrard, long may you live as a king in our court.

Surprised this has dropped like a lead balloon but I couldn't agree more.
Balotelli, Falcao, Cavani...

I'll be shocked if it's anyone other Etoo. Etoo or no-one. Simples.

In fact, I'll do you all a favor and ban myself from the January transfer window forum if we get anyone other than Etoo.

Well said. Obviously we are loosing a great player and a key member of our team that might take time to replace but that is natural.  I still don't think we've replaced Torres predatory striking movement towards defences but we've made it up in other ways with better link up play and two clinical and unpredictable strikers.

We will adapt, rest assured.

I think we are a more complete unit with regards to goals than previous Liverpool teams in the modern era. Reliability doesn't rest on the shoulders on just one player anymore for us to win matches.

I used to dread the thought of Gerrard retiring (he will be missed due to the fact of his greatness) but now I think we could cope in a couple of seasons time.

From Liddellpool to Owenopolis

Dad, what’ll we do if Mikey goes?
Cause the world revolves round those blessed toes
And whose gonna score us all those goals
Dad, what’ll we do if Mikey goes?

Son, when I was a kid I asked me dad
The same sort of question
The world had gone mad
Time had caught up with one really true great
Liddell was no more what would be our fate?

Fourteen games ‘fore his last the team had to shuffle
And a young lad called Hunt came and caused a kafuffle
And we all loved Sir Roger whilst remembering Billy
And the goals flowed and flowed, and our worries seemed silly

The ten years were gone and the years showed and told
And Roger today wasn’t the Hunt of old
What’ll we do we all cried to the Liverpool heavens
When up popped this blonde kid; the great Alun Evans

The goals were sublime but then ended too soon
With the golden kid glassed by some drunken buffoon
Oh how we wailed, who will lead our attack
Arrived then this Welshman, this giant Toshack

And the trophy’s kept flowing and a goal-fest commenced
When Shanks bought some no mark, as a thanks for Clemence
And then played him with Toshack, and then bugger me
A really great partnership, what a privilege to see

And we remembered Billy, and Roger and Alun
And the party went on with success by the gallon
Six years it went on and then the joy it expired
Keegan chased cash as the master retired.

What’ll we do Keegan gone Toshack now without aid
On this quaint wee Scotsman Kevs money paid
And then Kenny was King, and the things he could do
Son, Could’ve filled up three sides of this message to you.

Two  years with mere mortals did our Kenny reign
When appeared this big Welshman; Not Toshack again?
Not Toshack my son,  and well might you blush
The one that I speak of was the one Ian Rush

And the goal the rained in he was great, plain to see
So we found us another, come on Johnny B
Barnes he was brilliant and Rush he was cool
And we all blessed our luck in this great Liverpool.
And with Rushy gone Beards and Aldo  attack
And Barnesy supplying, and then Rushys back!
And the dance it went on, and the goals they rained in
The Death came and kissed us and joy it ran thin

Let us talk about Evans and Roger and Kenny
And Kevin and Tosh each man worth every penny
Of Aldo and twinkle-toed Barnes and of  Rushy
True kings all and none of them pushy

Kenny gave us Robbie, the scourge of defenders
Macca Spice and rest of the cool young pretenders
But the once famous Souness buggered it up
And all that they got was the Mickey-Mouse cup.

Then we got the real Mickey and how the goals flowed
But Robbie got sulky and precious and cold.
Then enter young Emile, a beast of a man
At least for a while he was loved by all fans.

Though he loved Billy Liddell my dad would recite
The names of the scorers who kept Anfield alight
Dick Forshaw Berry Nieuwenhuys, Gordon Hodgson,
Jackie Bimpson Jack Smith Jackie Balmer Albert Stubbins

They’re just names to me, I saw none of their goals
But I know them, and love them for each played their role
Embroidered Dad’s life gave him tales to tell lads
Who in turn pass them on to their lads, and their lads

Now maybe our Mikey’s  about to jump ship
It was nice whilst it lasted; but hey it’s his trip
And the Kop could be singing some other kids name
It’ll happen my son, you’ll see others reap fame

Remember your favourite be it Liddell or Digger
But in the end lad, its always the club that’s the bigger
For the great ones will come and the great ones will go
And we’ll all still be watching the Liverpool show

I think for many of our supporters, fear is the key. The fear of returning to a place from whence we came, a time when frustration from watching our rivals move further away tore into us and filled many with illogical doubt and set many to wondering whether we could ever return.

I picked out some quotes, because after reading some of the transfer threads I believe some of us could do with sitting down and reflecting for awhile.

"We should not fret for what is past, nor should we be anxious about the future; men of discernment deal only with the present moment." - Chanakya

"Fear stifles our thinking and actions. It creates indecisiveness that results in stagnation." - Charles Stanley

"Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop." - Usman B. Asif

"What's passive smoking? There's passive lots of things. Like passive listening to shitheads. I have to put up with that every day. Are you going to ban people from talking crap? They give me a headache. Believe me, they're killing me. One day people's conversations on the street will do me in." Terry Hall

I've seen too many players leave to get too bothered by this stuff anymore but I think if it wasnt for me trusting Rodgers to get us performing the same without him then I would be slightly worried by Luis leaving.

Gerrard I'm chuffed has made this decision as I think we will get another 3 years out of him easily.

This. And remember, these great players that have come to play for us, none of them were gems when they started their career with us. I don't know the exact recipe that has made them great, but I know that it's there in the gene of LFC... the fans, manager, (other) players or as Shankly said, the only Trinity that matters at LFC

Legend of a man. One short of the outfield record and still club before any personal records. I reckon whomever he christens this year to be the benefactor of his many assists could be in for some ride. Looks like Daniel is up next to be taken to the next level in no small part by Stevie.

Great post. Nail on head.
From here on in its all FSG's doing. Good or bad they will stand or fall by the decisions they have made in the summer of 2012. Lets hope they have gotten it right.
