Coady scores a header from a corner, decent little finish. 1-0.

To be fair, the development is down to the clubs...but with that being the case, spending all that money when you have little involvement in the development of players, is puzzling.

One of our boys scored? Always brings a smile to the face.

They get the players plenty at the earlier ages mate. Coady's been away at an international tournament for the past 3 seasons now I think.

And the problem is how many of those club coaches are coming through the FA's system anyways? Noel Blake went from the Stoke academy to the FA. Who have Stoke brought through in the past 10 years? Yet because he's nice and pally with the boys at the FA he gets the best footballers over the age of 17 and works with them X times a season (and it's not small amount).

What the utter fuck is the point of all that money on white elephants when these are the type of coaches you're allowing to work with the most talented youngsters. None of them develop players well.

Barkley needs to get himself involved more. He has talent and shows it sometimes, but the difference between someone like and say, Wilshere (hefty comparison I know) is that Barkley doesn't have anywhere near as much influence. He need to move to recieve the ball more, open space for himself and others. That might just solve a lot of Englands problems.

Agree with that. Its funny how they'll bring in Sven or Capello for the main team but wont search the globe for the better coaches of youth players. Even if it is just to consult with them over methodology.

They don't need to search the globe. There are a lot of good young coaches doing things the exact same way as they do in Spain, Portugal and Germany, working away day after day, week after week, in England. But they were neither professional players, nor are they flesh-pressers with FA bigwigs. They are just hard-working people doing a good job at levels that the FA don't give a damn about. If a number of those were to be meritoriously promoted to FA staff coach positions, then England would be in much better shape.

Agree with that as well. I just feel that the only way their heads will be turned is if it is someone of status in a foreign country. Because at this stage, finding worthy folks under their noses has not been a success/goal of theirs.

Has there ever been a dialogue between the FA and coaches of clubs in the premier league about this? Or do they just read and listen to the passive aggressive shots at them and treat it as white noise?

Drawing with Iraq is a new low..no offense to Iraq.

England badly underachieved. They should of been out of sight & Taylor needs to sort it out to get the best out of the players he's got. He's potentially got a good team but he just seemed to pick what he believed to be the best players & it was square pegs in round holes.

What on earth was Flanagan was doing for the 2nd goal??

The fact that fucking Peter Taylor is back involved in the set up is frightening.

Iraqi players for obvious reasons cannot play in Iraq, they have arguably the worst training facilities out of all those in the tournament, and still managed a draw with England, that is what you call progress, not to mention they're pride for the shirt too.

Another team thats made considerable progress for me is Australia, they were excellent against Colombia the current holders, especially the young lad Daniel De Silva. The fact that some of the so called 'inferior nations' have shown more noticeable progress than us in the last three years since South Africa (Japan, Australia and so on) sums everything up with us.

The key likeness, though, is the individual skill of each Spanish player, and their comfort in 1v1 situations. How the ball moves from player to player may differ, but the key components of their development are present in every age group. That's the impressive thing about Spain.

Exactly.

You could stick any of these under 20 or the under 21 players into the senior Spanish team and they would slot in nicely and play a whatever game they are told to due to there skill level.

Manquillo looks a good player. Same with the left back Bernat. Ghana deserve to at least get a draw in fairness.

We got a bit lucky against France, especially after Gil's poor penalty miss. Still happy Tabare is trying to select players who can play a bit, but our tactical naivete was exposed against Spain. Did a better job against France in a defending sense, anyway.

We'll need Ghana to be as clueless in the attacking third as they were against Spain to have any chance of slipping through...

I think this generation of US youth, though, is something to look forward to in future years. The quality is getting better and better. They didn't look out of place against France. France were beasts though. They still have that balance between physicality and technique just right, imo. The US will get there too. They have much to be positive about.

In all honesty, I wouldn't disagree in a technical sense, or even a tactical one. We are getting better in those areas.

Our shortcomings being exposed in international competition are mostly of the psychological side of the game. Our young players are  too coddled, made to feel too brilliant by helicopter parents, desperate recruiters masquerading as coaches, and even the Federation who relentlessly present only the supposed positives behind players and performances that are sometimes abysmal.

Watch the body language of our 23s, 20s, 17s, etc. when things go wrong. They don't know how to deal with failure. They've always been reassured that their participation in DA, ECNL, playing in Regional and National competitions or whatever, sets them above the hoi polloi of the average youth player.

That's where we miss Bob the most. No matter his tactical deficiencies/simplicities and his love for the certain type of mostly Neanderthal player, Bob was always able to get his teams to play the full 90 minutes. We're missing that now that the Fed has turned into little more than a marketing entity...

"Make it fun!" "Keep it positive! "Use the sandwich approach!"

Yeah, that does a lot of good as Deulofeu surges through the back four on yet another scything run...  ;)
