Fowler, Macca and Redknapp never really looked as good after that, though, although I'm sure it's coincidence.

I think Macca still looked great but it coincided with the start of Fowler and Redknapp's injury problems I seem to remember

I thought I was the only one with that feeling. McManaman #17and Fowler #23 were more lethal than when they were #7 and #9. At least that's how I felt. What I would give to have the blonder bomber #23 back  :P

I'd give it to Hendo considering he's the heir apparent to the armband. Hopefully it doesn't become another #7, carrying with it a huge amount of expectation and burden from the storied career of our soon to be chillin' in LA Stevie.

I seriously doubt anyone in the current squad would ask for the number 8 shirt. Whoever gets it next, whenever that is, is coming in from somewhere else (hell, it might even be Stevie himself if he ever comes back on loan during the MLS break).

I do hope someone takes the other available numbers though. Without a number 5, 7 or 8, the spine of a Liverpool team is missing!

We moved on from Carra's 23 pretty quickly, so I see no reason why we can't do the same with Gerrard's 8.

I'd have no qualms giving Hendo the 8 next season when he becomes captain.

Henderson without a doubt. He's already taken Stevie's number 4 for England.

I'd like to see Sterling get 7 and Lallana get 11 but I think there's something with Lallana and number 20.

No disrespect but Carra is nowhere near Stevie's stature in the club history, his number is unlikely to carry that much of a burden compared to #7 and #8.

Henderson should get #23 and Can #8 - the German has the balls to wear it and the versatility to match it.

If Henderson is getting a new number, it would have to be in the 1-11. Can already has Fowler and Carra's shirt, even for him it's a bit much to ask him to replace ALL of the club's three greatest local players in the Premier League era.

Henderson is fine as #14 in my opinion. No point putting pressure on him to fill Gerrard's boots.

Sterling surely must be changing his number sooner or later.

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place but does anyone know when the numbers for next season are confirmed if indeed any are changing? Going to get my little lad the new away kit when it comes out and he wants a new name on the back (all previous kits have been 8 Gerrard  ;D) and want to make sure I get it right!

The squad numbers are quite a mess!   If I was a manager, I'd stick with a traditional number of 1-25 rather than offering numbers away for fun.

Given that there are so many of the 1-11 empty, it represents a great chance to hark back to the 'classic' Liverpool system, I think:

2 - New centre-back/Skrtel
5 - Henderson
7 - New support striker
8 - Sterling/new right-sided player
9 - Sturridge
11 - Lucas

For those too young to recall, here's a blog post on same

I always equate numbr 5 with Whelan and kennedy, so left sided midfielder, 10 is centre mid with 11, 8 right sided.....I think we all pick numbers according to how we remember them.....barnes was unique, so he probably is the only number 10 on the left......and dalglish and rush made for me 7 and 9 as our striker numbers (whereas number 9 for many represents heighway/wing play)

I like it when we have numbers in 1-11, makes it feel like we have a proper line up, like we know what our best team is (I know it is fuckall to do with anything, but again, comes down to growing up without squad numbers)....but then certain numbers do evoke golden memories, 23 - fowler and carragher, more fowler for me, 14 - Alonso, etc....

Confirmed as 28 by carbon dating.

I agree.  I'd be very cautious about indulging the ego or vanity of unproven players by giving them oddball number options they haven't earned.  It shouldn't matter what number they're wearing, they should be more concerned with busting a gut in training and doing their best to contribute to the team when selected.

So 2, 5, 7, 8 and 11 are free? What is it with the "first team" shirts?

If Sterling stays, I reckon it's time for him to take the 7.

As a club we rarely 'promote' players squad numbers, they tend to stick to their original designation.

Riise and Gerrard moving from 18 and 17 to 6 and 8 in 2004 is the last time I can remember a player changing numbers to a 1-11 (or did Maxi do it, I can't remember). Anyway it's not very common,

Skrtel, Lucas, Reina, Carra, Alonso, Masch were/have been all at the club for years were key players and all kept their higher squad number.

Sturridge should have been given 9 last year no doubt, Sterling 7 or 11 but we either don't do that type of thing or our players are weirdly loyal and superstitious

Players being supersitious? Never! :D

Maybe we should copy Argentina from was it '78 or '82? When they had everyone's number in alphabetic order. Ardiles had number 1. And for those who don't know about him - he wasn't a goalie.

Indeed; Barnes came into the side with Whelan having shifted from left midfield to left-centre, taking the number 5 with him.

I think Steve Nicol was the other player who started messing with the system, taking the number 4 to right back - leading to first Gillespie and then Hysen wearing number 2 at CB?

It still bugs me when people talk about the '#10 role' in respect of Liverpool - it's the '#7'.

5 and 8 free for next season whoever steps up to 8 or Kovacic, but i doubt we sign him...

He could always have the 1+6, a la Zamorano(?). That would solve the problem. :P
