I thought it was ace!!  I've been a massive Beatles fan all my life and that 7 minutes has done more to recreate what it was actually like in the Cavern than all the other stuff put together.  How young were they all?  Just a gang of kids really.

Here's one of the Beatles doing a gig on the Royal Iris !

BTW, the site that shot is taken from might interest any 'over the water' types. If you do visit it, then hit the thumb-nails to enlarge....

Even though I've already posted a link to the site this pic is taken from (http://streetsofliverpool.co.uk/)  I had to highlight this particular one, it could be a 'still' from a film.

Some fantastic photo's in here .Thought I'd seen most of the old photo's of the area , but obviously not .

One good thing about the city is that a lot of the old buildings are still standing ( esp' the city centre ), so you can instatntlly recognise a lot of places shown.

Tremendous !

Speaking of "Merseybeat stuff" this moody old photo was taken in Granby Street in the mid-60s outside Charlie Crane's flat.  He took the photo.

If I remember rightly we used to get the Crown Coaches to away games at the top of St John's Lane. There was no orderly queuing either - it was every man for himself (and the odd woman)!

Looking a bit more closely, I now don't think it's at that spot as the window to the left in the background doesn't quite match. Also I would have thought the curved wall would be more pronounced to the right background, though sometimes photographs can flatten these sort of features at certain angles. It does seem to be somewhere around there though, the style and architecture is very similar.

But....have a dekko at this featuring Myrtle Gardens...

No, I don't think so.  Smithdown Rd. is quite far from Smithdown Lane and the flats you showed were quite modern.

The tenements in the photo I posted were demolished back in the 70s.

Yes, but that place I posted is nowhere near Smithdown Road.
That's my fault for leaving a remnant of my initial search saying that on the page.
Here's a new link saying where it is correctly named.
It's Melville place just over from Smithdown Lane where you said it was around.
Those flats are very much the original Myrtle Gardens structures from the 30's that have been refurbished and given a makeover, new windows and roof etc. Almost unrecognisable at first but honestly, it is them.

It's called Minster court now and here tells you the history.
You see I can't really think or even recall any other buildings around that Smithdown Lane/Crown Street area that had that distinctive brickwork and balcony features.

The windows are very distinctive in those early shots (small panes - 6 deep), just as they are in Bob's pic.

It's also the two drain pipes on the wall in the background, with support brackets in exactly the same places.
The top of the balcony has had the original bit removed during refurbishment.

It's such an iconic photograph it would be a shame if we can't somehow locate it. It's almost David Bailey like in it's evocation of the early 60's.

But I'm not totally positive it's that spot as you could be right about that particular bit being demolished.

Here's another great old shot of the area with Crown Street running across in front and Melville down the centre....

http://newimages.fotopic.net/?iid=y49739&outx=680&quality=70

(I'd insert them directly normally but they are using some kind of blocking to prevent it working. If it doesn't show when you click on these links, right click on the link and copy the URL shortcut  and post it in a new tab on your browser)

The part of Myrtle on the left on Melville Place doesn't exist anymore so your photo could perhaps have been taken with somewhere around that as a backdrop.

But the photo you've posted above does suggest that my original hunch might be correct though. You can just make out the old tenements behind you further down Melville.

This is a panorama from the old coal yard.

http://newimages.fotopic.net/?iid=y4nx8e&outx=800&quality=70

These are all from here with some other great then and now pics.

It's amazing, the whole area is almost totally unrecognisable these days.

Reading the Auld Arses thread and seeing the mention of The Iron Lung pub, reminded me of this film The Magnet I last saw years ago.
Although it's set in New Brighton, there's quite a lot of interesting shots of Liverpool back in 1950 in it.
